No less an expert on pop affairs than Neil Sedaka likens the impossibly mature voice of 14-year-old vocalist/TV star (CBS' Still Standing) Renee Olstead to "Patsy Cline, Ella Fitzgerald and Billie Holiday all wrapped in one." There's no disputing the sultry vocal talents showcased on this debut that balances familiar chestnuts from the great American songbook ("Summertime," "Someone to Watch Over Me," "Sentimental Journey") with more recent fare that veers from R 'n' B sass ("Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby") to 70s chart hits like Sedaka's own "Breaking Up Is Hard to Do" and Maria Muldaur's "Midnight at the Oasis." A cynical ear might question how much of Olmstead's own life informs these bluesy performances: how trying can eigth grade be for an attractive redhead with a major label contract? Indeed, the tagline for at least one latter-day Ella Fitzgerald project comes frequently to mind here: "Is it real, or it Memorex?" Olmstead is yet another teen protege of hugely successful producer David Foster (who's midwifed the careers of Josh Groban and Michael Buble in recent years), and he provides her with some sturdy jazz arrangements to riff emotively on here--even if his production is as slick and bloodless as ever. Still, Foster's penchant for overwrought melodrama is kept mercifully in check on his own composition "I Want a Love to Last," while his shrewd teaming of the young chanteuse with fellow teen pop phenom Peter Cincotti on Sedaka's "Breaking Up.." deftly underscores the promising talents of both. --Jerry McCulley

幼さとしたたかさを織り交ぜた歌唱は、素敵です。

インタネット・ラジオ局の smooth.jazz から「A Love That Will Last」が流れてて、思わずヴォーカルの名前をハードコピーしました。なんと艶やかな声だろう。ジャズヴォーカルで声の虜になったのは、ペギーリー以来です。彼女のホームサイトがありますね。若くてもこの歌声は天性のものなのでしょう。

何せティーン・エイジということで声が若くって（当たり前か）とってもキュート！なのに

このテクニック。このアンバランスさが何ともイイ！

ちょっと背伸びしてコケティッシュな歌い方をしているのがまたイイ！

「ON A SLOW BOAT TO CHINA」がMY FAVORITEですが、単におぢさん・キラーというだけでなく

すべてのVOCALファン・JAZZファンに聴いて欲しい天才少女です！

ほとんど気まぐれで買ってみたのですが、
まあ、驚いた、驚いた。
本当に１５歳なの？？？
出だしのＳｕｍｍｅｒｔｉｍｅでもう完全に
ノックアウトされてしまいました。
多少、若さが出てるところもありますが
そんなのは何の問題でもない。
Ｊａｚｚに興味など無くてもそれも問題ではない。
騙されたと思って聞いてみて頂きたい。

いやはや末恐ろしい。
冒頭サマー・タイムからして、リアンのアメージング・グレイスを
初めて聴いた時以来の、嬉しくも激しいショックを受けた。
４曲目に至って、ホンマに１５才？と思わず口からでた。参りました。
その素晴らしいボーカルに、勝るとも劣らぬ鳥肌物の優秀録音は
再生システムのグレードに幾らでも追随してくる様なＳ・サウンド。
貴方の装置（オーディオ・システム）で、それを生かしきれるか！？

Quelle voix ! La suavité même, jeune mais si féminine et volubile. Comme on a eu le bon goût de lui faire chanter ces standards de jazz flirtant parfois vers la pop mais surtout une majorité de ballades toutes plus charmantes les unes que les autres. Elle n'est jamais autant séduisante qu'au naturel, dans un registre doux et intimiste, parfois mutin mais jamais affecté. Quel plaisir de sentir alors les frissons courir du haut de l'échine jusqu'aux pieds. Un grand orchestre aux nombreux pupitres de cuivres l'accompagne, sage et propret, mais avec le bon goût de ne jamais prendre le dessus en offrant un écrin de satin classieux. Voilà un album exquis au cool chatoyant qui vous laissera rêveur et sous le charme. Une vraie découverte.

I first heard Renee Olstead sing on a digital music channel on cable. I was in another room from which I could barely hear her, but her rendition of "Summertime" was so unusual that I jumped up to catch the name of the singer while it was still displayed on the screen. I purchased the CD based upon hearing that one song. I wasn't disappointed. In fact, I was blown away. Renee's vocal range, and interpretation of these standards makes her far and away the best female jazz singer to come on the scene in the last 10 years. I was stunned when I learned after several listenings of her CD, that Renee is still a teenager. I've since read criticisms that she lacks the chops to sing these classics from the American Songbook with true feeling. Well, I'm sorry, but I've heard most of female torch singers who have lived and experienced it all, and they couldn't sing backup for this girl. If she is singing with borrowed emotion, she borrowed from the best. On "Is You Is Or Is You Ain't My Baby?" her rendition is at least the equal of Dinah Washington's excellent version of the song. The key to Renee is not how she sounds like top singers from the past, but how she makes each song uniquely her own. Her interpretations are fresh and energetic. Just listening to the first two songs on the CD, "Summertime" and "Taking A Chance on Love," tells you that this is a very special singer. When her next album appears, I'll be among the first to order a copy. If Renee stays in this genre, and I hope she does, she'll be at the top of the field for decades to come.
