Baedeker's London and It's Environs 1900: A Handbook for Travellers ハードカバー – ファクシミリ, 2006/12/15
英語版
Karl Baedeker
(著)
Baedeker's guide books first appeared in 1827 and by the time this edition of 'London and its Environs' was published in 1900 they had earned a well deserved reputation for meticulous accuracy and encyclopaedic content. Each successive edition included up to the minute revisions obtained by an army of local agents, the accuracy of whose work was constantly checked by members of the Baedeker family who travelled incognito throughout Europe checking the facts and figures that appeared in their books. This book brings to life, in astonishing detail, a complete picture of all that a visitor might wish to know about the world's greatest city at the close of the Victorian era. In over 500 pages with a fold out map of London and the surrounding countryside, numerous plans of notable buildings and 31 pages of coloured street plans, not only are all the major sites and attractions mentioned, but there is copious advice on etiquette; Recommended Shops from drapers and hosiers to pianoforte manufactures and trunk makers; Markets. There is also a history of London. Visitors are guided on a dozen tours by steamer and train to London's environs such as The Crystal Palace, Windsor Castle and as far afield as Rochester and St Albans each being packed with directions, historical facts, travel arrangements and costs.

Also wirklich etwas für Liebhaber.

This is a reprint of a guidebook for visitors to London, as published in 1900. There are earlier versions of this book as well, but to the best of my knowledge this is the only one reprinted. This (and the others) being in the public domain, a little digging on Google Books will find online copies of this work.
That said, while I'm pretty comfortable reading works online (or turned to pdf and transferred to a Kindle DX), this is the sort of book that works out well in hardcopy form. Guidebooks are often nice to flip through, allowing you to reach a random page. Physically, you're looking at an odd shaped book - shorter than a paperback book but quite thick, measuring at nearly 500 pages. The pages are fairly thick - a little thicker than I'd prefer to be honest, making flipping through the book a little tricky, as the pages are rather stiff.
Obviously you are not getting this book to get a view of modern London. I would imagine the audience would be people with an interest in the literature of the time, people interested in history, writers doing research, role-players, and Londonphiles (if that's a word). As a guidebook intended for tourists, it has an advantage over more modern references to the period, in that it assumes minimal knowledge of London. A more modern work might be written for people familiar with modern London, something that does not apply to an American like me (who has visited London, though only once during some free time on a business trip). It has details on dining, transportation, museums, etc., a lot of the stuff one would expect to see in a guidebook. It has several nice maps of the city, smaller scale maps of various locations within the city, railway maps, and several maps of tourist destinations such as museums. It doesn't really delve into the "grittier" side of the city or into everyday life, though that is to be expected in a book intended for tourists.

A fascinating volume. If you are interested in London and its history this provides you with an insight into what has been lost - especially due to the Blitz. I found it useful to have one of the Cassini 1895 maps as I read the book, as one can compare the 'then' with the 'now'.
It certainly adds to my walks around London as it reminds one of what a great capital city London was in the 1900's.
My great-grandmother owned a French laundry just off the Tottenham Court Road in around 1900 but she died before I was in my teens. I wish I could have shown her this book and obtained her views of the sights, entertainments, etc. that are featured in the book.Especially as some of her major clients were the posh hotels and restaurants.
With a good imagination, one can relive some of the experiences that the late Victorian period partook. 'Gosford Park' and 'Downton Abbey'become more real when you can relate their stories to the metropolis.
