In 5 weeks in 1962, Green recorded 3 unique quartet sessions with Sonny Clark on piano, Sam Jones on bass and Louis Hayes or Art Blakey on drums. Of the 3 LPs (all considered too progressive for Green's soul-jazz following), only one (Airegin) came out in the U.S.; Gooden's Corner and Oleo were released only in Japan. Collector's items of legendary status (those who have heard these sessions consider them some of the best work Green ever recorded), now all 3 are available, with 3 bonus tracks, on this specially priced 2-CD set.

Over a five-week period in early 1962, Grant Green recorded three amazing quartet sessions with Sonny Clark on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Louis Hayes or Art Blakey on drums. As magnificent as the results were, the three albums, considered too progressive for Green's soul-jazz following, languished in the vaults for 18 years. In 1980, "Airegin," the session with Blakey, came out in the United States, while the two with Hayes ("Gooden's Corner" and "Oleo") came out only in Japan. Later issued briefly on Mosaic with three bonus tracks, they have since become collectors' items of legendary proportions. Now Blue Note is finally making them available on this specially-priced 2-CD set. Some of the best music Grant Green ever recorded. [Super Bit Mapping]

この音が聴きたくて、毎日聴いていた時期もあった。特にシングルトーンの高音の伸びは、とても魅力的だ。私は、すべてのジャズギターの録音した中でも、一番いいと思います。サムジョーンズは、ウェスモンゴメリーの歴史的録音にも参加していた。重要な作品には、よく顔出していますね。渋いジャケット写真見ただけでファンは買いだね。しかし、なんでブルーノートにこんなにも作品多かったのかね？

以前から、「Nigeria」や「Latin bit」などのアルバムを愛聴していました。（前者は、40年以上ファンであるジャズメッセンジャーズのブレーキーのドラミングとグリーンのギターが喧嘩していないか聴いてみたら、あらまあいい具合だったのと、後者はこれまた好きなラテン曲目が入っていたので買ってみたらまたまた良かったというものです。）後年の物も数作購入して聴いてみましたが、どうもよろしくないものが多かったので、古めの本作（アルバム3枚分だそうで、「Nigeria」も丸ごと入っていましたが、これまた好きな曲のMoon Riverが入っていたので）を入手しました。他の方も書いていらっしゃいますが、スタジオ録音にもかかわらず、ライヴ感が濃い感じ（特に2枚組の2枚目）です。結構歳を取りましたが、まだまだ聴いたことのない名盤（というか旧アルバムの編集版CD）があるものですね。

ソニー・クラークと聞いて「ああ、『クール・ストラッティン』の人ね」と軽くあしらう人は、彼の真髄を味わっていない人ではないだろうか。私は根っからのソニー・クラーク・ファン、いや、正しくは「ソニー・クラーク・コンプレックス」の人種である。それはなぜか?!理由は、27歳の若さで他界した、彼の出すピアノ・サウンド、その完成度の高さである。「ジャズ・ピアニストは、こういう音で弾きたい！」という悲願を、27歳になる前から実現していたのだから頭が下がる。これは彼の感性なのか、それとも誰か優れた師匠からの伝授なのか（両方かも・・・）。繰り返しになるが、「ピアノからこういう音が出る」ということを幼い内から知っていた、ということなのかも知れない（★みなさん、音楽の才能を育てるのは家庭環境ですよ。学校ではありません★）。
　さて、そのＳ．クラークとグラント・グリーンが共演している、というのでは、コンプレックス持ちの私なら「絶対に買い!!」だ。しかも、お得な『２枚組ＣＤ』である。もう、個性溢れる二人のサウンドが「もう、たくさんです!!」と言えるほどに聴けるのだ。これは、まさに「録音による文化財産」である。

アイドルモメントと比べるとニタリとするねぇ

何がかというと
アンプとアンプのセッティングとマイク位置の違い

アイドルのそれは、フェンダーの小型アンプだと思うが、小型アンプ特有の歪みが心地よい
基本的にリバーブ感は薄
マイクはオンマイクではなかろうか
まさしく君だけへの弾き語り

このアルバムは、デラックスリバーブあたりでこれまた独特の歪みとリバーブ感がある意味でホール感を醸し出している
マイクも少々オフセットであろう

しかし、ドラミングが時代を感じる

ジャズが分かり始めると、どうしても避けて通れない名盤にぶち当たります。
本来そうする必要がないのに、なぜか気合いを入れて聴かなきゃいけないような気が
してしまうものです。
でも、本を読みながらでも、webを眺めながらでも、洗濯をしながらでも聴いていいはず
なんです。もちろん、そういう音楽は本格的なオーディオセットでじっくり聴き込んでも
イイものなんですけど。

この二枚組は、私にとってそんなアルバム。否が応にも感覚を持って行かれるというほど
ではありませんが、自然と耳になじむ心地よい演奏集です。
何曲かには御大アート・ブレイキーが参加していますが、決してドカドカ叩いたりしないで、
全員でセッションを楽しんでいる感じ。他のプレイヤーもやたらと主張することなく、
演奏、選曲、録音などすべてにおいて「いい塩梅」で、時々聴きたくなる佳作です。

ジャズギターと言うとどうしてもウェス・モンゴメリー、となりがちですが、一枚(1セット)
選べと言われたら、ウェスの「Full House」か本作かで大いに迷うことでしょう。

2枚目の冒頭”Moon River”が終わり、「さて、ところで」という感じで低く入って来るモダン・ブルース”Gooden's Coner"の感覚がたまらなく好き。
普段コテコテのR&Bも多いグリーンだが、ソニー・クラークの暗さに触発されたのか、ここではブルージーだがクールなジャズギターを披露してくれる。

If you are reading this then you know about Grant Green. Jazz legend. The tunes and tones here are well worth the cost of buy this collection of songs. I bought this to replace a previous copy that went missing. Am glad to have reconnected with this. Buy it and turn up!

Grant Green has a unique place in guitar bebop and hard bop history, hard bop being roughly the follow-up to bebop that was invented for all intent and purposes by Charlie Christian and Benny Goodman, with lots of input from Thelonious Monk, Art Blakey and other greats in the very early 1940's, to the debut of Miles Davis and John Coltrane, Charlie Parker and others who made bebop arrangements more complicated and jam oriented. By the time the two greatest jazz guitarists ever, Wes Montgomery and Kenny Burrell came on the scene, and both were friends and played together occasionally (wouldn't an album with those two been something?!), the hard bop was coming in vogue, and several great players also made their marks, including Tal Farlow and Barney Kessell. Grant Green came along in the very early 1960's, first as a studio musician and then coming into his own. Unlike his contemporaries however, he preferred to solo, only rarely playing chords, letting his bandmates do that and patiently wait for his turn to shine.
As "Green Street" shows, that doesn't mean he couldn't play excellent rhythm and chords as he demonstrates as a three piece, and a few spots here on "The Complete Quartets" reveal more of the same. What makes Green stand out however is his tone, and especially fantastic arrangements and compositions, and this CD is regarded among the best songs he ever recorded.
It's a double CD and as the title indicates, is a showcase between Green and pianist Sonny Clark, a legend in his own right. There are the standards, "Moon River", which is almost unrecognizable from the sappy original, the ever present "My Favorite Things", again rearranged to make it fresh, but tunes like the opener "Airegin" are the cat's meow. This CD is smoother than an ice cream float, the guitar so tasteful it's ridiculous, and the vibe is absolutely timeless. There are a few cuts that appear on other albums that were released later, but that's fine.
The fact is, Green's solo work does not dissuade a listener from thinking he could play chords - in fact, his improvising and melodic mastery come from an advanced understanding of chord work. As experienced lead players who excel in rhythm comping as well, you must understand chord work as the crucial bedrock to your style. Without it, as evidenced in the later years of shred guitars, players were adept at lead work but had to rely solely on very boring scales and were basically incapable of improvising. Only the best could truly improvise, and while Green may not achieve the status of the two Kings, Montgomery and Burrell, he nonetheless was in that elite class. This is a great deal for two hours of jazz hard bop guitar and combo bliss.
