クールで硬派でインテリで。かつオシャレ。

akaってなに？ってずっと思ってて、As Known Asの略って最近知りました。つまり、旧称みたいな。そんな感じでSpecialsのアルバムの一つみたいなイメージだけど、こっちはin the studio、ひきこもりがちです。
とにかくノリがいいのはNelson Mandelaだけで、他はとにかくダウナー。PrinceのSign Of The Timesあたりを思い出させるひんやりとした質感。Jazzもどき、Jazzで踊ろうっていうのが当時流行っていて、そんな背伸び感も今思えば懐かしい。Jerry Dammersもこの時点ではJoe Jacksonより評価上だった面もあった。カッコ良さでは今でもJerryのほうが上だと思います。

50年代のJAZZアルバムを思わせるジャケットからもわかるように、

スペシャルズよりももっとクールな質感でスカに拘らない多彩なサウンドが楽しめる傑作。

ジェリー・ダマーズが中心となって、女性ヴォーカルもフィーチャーしてより広い範囲のブラック・ミュージックの影響が音に現れている。

サウンド指向も、曲名から明白な政治的メッセージも、

同時代のポール・ウェラー（スタイル・カウンシル）などと同じ方向を向いていたことがわかる。

クールでありながらあくまでポップ。

アルバム1枚で終わってしまった事がとても残念である。

文句のつけようがない。練りに練りこまれた、圧倒的な完成度を誇る大名盤である。発売当時、ピーター･バラカン氏が大絶賛していてついつい買ってしまったのが運の尽き。何度聴いたか分らない。ところが現在も尚、ＣＤとして我が家の愛聴盤である。クールでカッコいい！トンガッた音楽が好みなら、どんなの？とか聞かずにとりあえず聴いてくれ！！

This review aims to set a few things straight... First, this is the Specials AKA, the assembly of talented musicians and singers gathered by Jerry Dammers, and not the original Specials lineup. And so you won't hear Terry Hall, but equally great lead vocals by Rhoda Dakar, Stan Campbell, and even Jerry Dammers himself. Second, there is the extended version and the original release. The original is great, the extended version imo, a quiet masterpiece. Listen and don't judge it too quickly as other reviewers have noted. To quote the Guardian music critic (who gave it five stars): Dammers’s collision of jazz, reggae and soul was deeply idiosyncratic, full of strange chords sequences and unexpected shifts in key, packed with weird ideas that somehow worked. Final note to Amazon: why has the price jumped so high on the extended CD? I paid a third of the price. Let's make great music affordable !

I'm the kind of guy that while he loves the Specials, he'd rather hear Jerry without the Specials than the Specials without Jerry. I had a couple of the singles as a kid, but only had the money for so many LPs so I've just got round to buying this recently and have found that I love it. The classic Nelson Mandela is here, but it's the the less well known singles 'What I Like Most About You Is Your Girlfriend' and 'War Crimes' that point to the noir within. It's a bit like 'More Specials', relocated from Coventry to London without the Funboys, and moved further along the 1980s both sound-wise and in its viewpoint on society. Brilliant stuff - I can't believe it took me >30 years to get round to it.

I owned this LP when it came out but found it somehow missing from my current collection. This recent purchase reminded me just how good it still is , why I loved it then, and just how talented Jerry Dammers et al are.
Highly recommend

I've always loved the specials pretty much from when they appeared in 79.
Have had both 'the specials' and ' more specials'. Played em to death and even now. However I seemed for one reason or another to have missed 'in the studio'.
Shame I did because it's a great album with lots of intelligent and political songs on.
Even the extra tracks are OK on the second disc with some of the songs being instrumentals off the first disc and a few John peel sessions tracks also. The boiler by Rhoda Dakar is the best on disc 2. This album in hindsight is up there with the first two. I know it was a different line up but it makes no odds. If you like the specials or have this on vinyl get this special edition. Worth it.
