やってみたい、やらなくちゃと思ったらカウントダウン。5, 4, 3, 2, 1, Go! で行動に移す。脳が、やらない理由をあれこれ思いつく前に。脳が、やっぱりやめとこうとストップをかける前に。この本が言っているのは、煎じ詰めればこれだけです。シンプルですが、なるほどと思いました。日々、本当はやらなければならないけれど気がすすまないこと、考えたほうがいいけれど直面したくないこと、いろいろあるものですが、ロケットの発射のように、言い訳したがる自分の思考から問答無用で飛び出して、手掛け始めるというのは大事だと思います。
成功者が行動を継続できるのは、必ずしも楽しいからではない。どんなに長くやっていても、好きになれないことはある。やらなければいけないからやるのだ。やってみたら楽しいこと、自分に向いているとわかることもありますが、楽しくなかったからと言ってやめるのもまずい、それがやらなければならないことなら。Just do it. Get things done.
もう一つ、これは著者の持論ではなく研究者の説からの引用ですが、目覚まし時計のスヌーズ機能は絶対に使うべきではない、という説明が新鮮で、その理由も説得力があり、取り入れていこうと思いました。あれは5分間だけ睡眠時間を延ばせたという単純な効果にはならないんですね… むしろその後の脳の活動を4時間くらい阻害してしまうと。新しい睡眠サイクルに入ることになってしまうからだそうです。確かに、二度寝したら驚くような長時間寝てしまうことってありますよね。私も、目覚まし時計がなったら、できるだけ(できるだけですが)5秒以内に体を起こすようになりました。NASAのカウントダウン音声の目覚ましとかあるといいですねえ。『サンダーバード』でもいい。
著者はTEDでも評価が高いようですが、さすがにナレーションがうまく、著者自身のつらい時期を語るChapter 2もテキパキと前向きで、聞き手を暗くさせません。全体的に早口ですが日本人にも聴き取りやすい明瞭な話し方です。内容もいいですが、リスニング教材を探している方にもおすすめできます。

Very Inspiring Book

I made it a goal of mine to start reading a new book a month, just ten pages a day, again. I always wanted to read this book by Mel Robins after hearing her in a podcast on Impact Theory and how she was in a slump and climbed her way out of it. Very inspiring.
I really liked how practical this book was, yes there are some filler pages of testimonials and whatnot but the principle is clear. Your mind has about 5-second window before you start to over think things. This can include getting up in the morning, introducing yourself to others, speaking in a meeting etc. when you act within those 5 seconds you interrupt your brain from going into overthinking mode and you do what you always wanted to do. THIS IS SO POWERFUL.
I included in my review a screenshot of one of the pages that I found was really useful, which was what the impact of hitting the snooze button does to our brain from a scientific perspective. After applying the rocket ship launch method at wake, I can 100% attest to feeling less groggy and more in control of my day. 10/10 would recommend this book. It’s up there with Atomic Habits. 👌🏽

I started reading this book a few weeks ago and already I am breaking bad habits, actually focusing on things I need to do and being productive in my day! My schedule and life is feeling so much lighter now that I am getting work done and getting it out of my head! After all, “the brain remembers unfinished tasks more than finished ones!” And my head had been swarming with unfinished things for months!
This book is a must read for anyone struggling to get work done, feeling frustrated on the lack of progress they have made toward their goals or dealing with worry or anxiety.

Now, your turn, Mel. Thank you from the bottom of my heart. These 5 seconds have done more for me in a week than all the previous self-help "methods" I barely applied before. And believe me, having just turned 63, I have tried quite a few.
Truth be told, it's indeed simple but in no way easy. There are ups and downs, "what the heck moments", and then 5-4-3-2-1 kicks in and gives me the courage to face those times I would have avoided before.
Dear readers, if you feel like you're stuck in your life, just give the 5 Seconds Rule a chance to prove you there's light at the end of the tunnel.
