My dare. My friend. My fault.
Uplifting and unpredictable, this poignant debut middle-grade novel is a classic in the making. Perfect for fans of Wonder and A Boy Called Hope.
Ethan had been many things. He was always ready for adventure and always willing to accept a dare, especially from his best friend, Kacey. But that was before. Before the accident that took Kacey from him. Before his family moved from the city he loves to a tiny town in the middle of nowhere.
Ethan's new home feels like the place for second chances. It's also home to Coralee, a girl with a big personality and even bigger stories. Coralee may be just the friend Ethan needs, except Ethan isn't the only one with secrets. Coralee's are catching up with her, and what she's hiding might be putting both their lives at risk.
The Ethan I Was Before is a story of friendship, wonder, adventure and ultimately of hope.

レビュー
The emotional heart of the book is lovely. ― Book Bag Published On: 2017-05-15
Readers will be riveted ― Publishers Weekly, starred review
This well-executed, first-person narrative succeeds largely dude to Standish's ability to give Ethan a vibrant presence and a voice that readers of all ages can identify with. Secondary characters, whom we see entirely from his perspective, are real and compelling. It challenges inpsires and entertains, with a satisfying, nail-biting ending. ― The School Librarian Published On: 2017-07-01
An emotionally powerful story... wonderful characterisation and a strong sense of place are just part of what makes this book feel like a future classic. ― Book Trust Published On: 2017-08-01

It is the story of a young Ethan who experiences a tragic loss of his best friend for which he carries a sense of guilt. His family leaves Boston and moves south to the coast to live with his mother’s estranged father, to try to get a new start. This adds other layers to the story – there is guilt and loss on different levels, there is isolation, there is a mysterious stranger, there is a hurricane, and there is an endangered red wolf species. I highly recommend this book to anyone ten years old to hundred – you will resonate with this story on some level.
The story tells the story of Ethan. At the story of the book we see Ethan and his family moving away from there house in Boston to move to live with there grandad.
We learn that the family has moved due to a incident surrounding his best Ethan friend Kacey (who we later learn was tragically killed due to something Ethan did).
Ethan is struggling to come to terms with Kacey loss. Ethan brother Roddie is not talking to him and his parents are over protective of him as he is known to runaway.
However when Ethan starts schools he meets a girl called Coralee who quickly become friends. However is Coralee friendship just to replace Kacey?
Once the story progress Ethan starts to open up about his grief and we learn that Coralee also has a secret (some of the stories she tells don't seem real to Ethan).
Can Ethan finally move on from Kacey while also solving Coralee secret.
I loved this book.
The highlight of the book is the chemistry between Ethan and Coralee is brilliant seeing the relationship grow throughout the book which is cute and charming.
The book was a number of twists and turns which keep the reader entertained.
However the book deals with someone guilt and that due cant live with your guilt forever and that you have learn to move on.
I little confess where the connection to Wonder (which is states on the book) as it is nothing like Wonder although it does have the charm.
However this was a brilliant read which I will strongly recommend.
The book as a number group questions at the end which will make this perfect read for a young reading group.
The book has received a number of literature awards which it fully deserves as the book is brilliant.
