Digitally re-mastered and expanded edition of this 1986 album from the Soul singer/ songwriter. Already established as a songwriter of note (thanks to hits by Ben E. King, Roberta Flack and Angela Bofill) and an in-demand New York City session and jingle singer, Oklahoma-born, New Jersey-raised Gwen Guthrie began her own solo recording career in 1981. It was with the now-classic Dance and Soul anthem "Ain't Nothin' Goin' on But the Rent" that Gwen experienced her greatest international success. A #1 US R&B and Top 50 pop hit, the track became the centerpiece for Good to Go Lover, Gwen's debut album for Polydor Records. A Top 20 US R&B album, Good to Go Lover spawned the additional Dance/Soul hit "Outside in the Rain" and a potent reading of the Bacharach-David classic, "(They Long to Be) Close to You." Gwen herself helmed the production with additional production work from Dave 'Pic' Conley of the group Surface (with members of the group also contributing as writers to three songs).
I have always been a huge Gwen Guthrie fan, and even had the opportunity to see her perform live at a club in NYC , before she passed away! She was an awesome singer, and her songs are great. This is her first Cd, and it has 8 tracks, which are all wonderful in their own respective right. You can put this on and let it play nonstop from start to finish! My favorite songs are THEY LONG TO BE CLOSE TO YOU... OUTSIDE IN THE RAIN... GOOD TO GO LOVER..AIN'T NOTHING GOING ON BUT THE RENT... STOP HOLDING BACK..& PASSION EYES. If you are a fan of Gwen Guthrie pick this up asap! Its a must have for any old school collection!I am happy with my purchase!
This is a fab album by the late Gwen Guthrie. The sound is brilliant and clear.
My favourite tracks are "Close to you", "Passion Eyes", "Good to go lover" and the 12"club mix of "Ain't nothing goin' on but the rent". I was a bit disappointed that the 7" version of "Ain't nothing goin on but the rent" wasn't included, I fund the album version doesn't have the same punch. That's only a minor quibble though as this is a very enjoyable album.
