This is a wonderful live solo performance. Zeitlin has managed to capture the spirit of Shorter while maintaining his own, and in so doing, takes the kind of unexpected detours that are common to both him and Shorter. His technique is formidable, but always in service of the music. Zeitlin is a two-handed pianist, and the richness and unpredictability of his improvisations are a joy. On E.S.P., as in a couple of other numbers, he creates a walking bass line before returning to the theme. Throughout, the CD is consistent in its quality and originality. Les Peetz
