Grammy-winning electronic producer Zedd is known for dynamic, electro-house tracks and a glitchy, pulsing production style. He first broke through in 2010 with a remix of Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites" before parlaying that buzz into mainstream success with his 2012 album debut, Clarity. Buoyed by the single "Stay the Night" with Hayley Williams, Clarity reached the U.S. Top Ten and earned him a Grammy for Best Dance Recording. His sophomore album, True Colors, spawned the hit "I Want You to Know" with Selena Gomez and landed at number four (plus number one on the dance charts). Along with his own work, he has remained an in-demand producer, collaborating on tracks with a bevy of pop luminaries including Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber, and Ariana Grande. In 2018, he joined Grammy-winning country singer Maren Morris and L.A. electronic duo Grey for the Top 40 hit "The Middle." Over the next few years, his collaborations included 2019's "365" with Katy Perry and 2022's "Follow" with Martin Garrix.
Born Anton Zaslavski in 1989 in Saratov, Russia, Zedd grew up in Kaiserslautern, Germany, where he started out on piano at four years old. Classically trained, he eventually moved on to drums and by the early 2000s was playing in the German deathcore outfit Dioramic. Along the way, he discovered electronic music and in 2009 began experimenting with producing his own tracks. It was around this time that he adopted the stage name Zedd (inspired by the non-American pronunciation of the letter z), and quickly built his reputation by posting tracks to Beatport and remixing songs by well-known artists, including tracks like Skrillex's "Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites," Lady Gaga's "Born This Way," Armand Van Helden's "Witch Doktor," and others.
Zedd also began releasing his own singles and EPs, and in late 2012, delivered his first full-length, the club-worthy Clarity. Included on the album was the song "Spectrum" which shot to the top of the U.S. dance chart. One of the follow-ups, "Stay the Night" featuring Hayley Williams, also garnered attention, reaching number two on the British pop charts and cracking the Top 20 of the Billboard Hot 100. The title track, featuring British pop singer Foxes, won a Grammy for Best Dance Recording in 2014. That same year, Zedd scored another hit with Ariana Grande's track "Break Free."
In 2015, he released his sophomore LP, True Colors, which presented more stylistic diversity, dipping into rock and hip-hop influences. The collection featured Selena Gomez, Troye Sivan, and Logic among its guests, and topped the Billboard dance/electronic chart. An international tour in support of the album followed. In 2017, Zedd issued the single "Stay," featuring Canadian singer Alessia Cara on vocals. The following year, he collaborated with country sensation Maren Morris and electro duo Grey for the single "The Middle," which topped Billboard's Hot Dance/Electronic Songs charts and landed three Grammy nominations. 2019 saw Zedd team up with Katy Perry for the single "365" and later with Kehlani for "Good Thing." The song "Funny" featuring Jasmine Thompson arrived in July 2020. Zedd remained relatively quiet over the next year, returning in 2022 with collaborative singles like "You've Got to Let Go If You Want to Be Free" with Disclosure and "Follow" with Martin Garrix.~ Matt Collar
Through uploading her acoustic interpretations of contemporary hits, pop-R&B singer, songwriter, and producer Alessia Cara landed a contract with Def Jam and at the age of 18 made her recorded debut with "Here" (2015). The distinctive wallflower anthem went platinum and Top Five pop, leading to the release of the full-length Know-It All and Juno Awards for Breakthrough Artist of the Year and Pop Album of the Year, subsequent Grammy-nominated collaborations with Zedd ("Stay") and Logic ("1-800-273-8255"), and a Grammy win for Best New Artist. She joked that as a youngster she practiced "pretend winning" Grammys, a confession belied by an unassuming disposition that also informs her relatable songs. Just after Know-It-All turned three years old, Cara followed up with second album Pains of Growing (2018), which took home the Juno Award for Album of the Year. Cara branched out with collaborations, a role in the animated film The Willoughbys, and a couple EPs before she released her third LP, In the Meantime (2021).
A native of suburban Toronto, Ontario -- she was born in Mississauga and raised in nearby Brampton -- Alessia Caracciolo started on her musical path at the age of ten, when she acquired an acoustic guitar and discovered the music of Amy Winehouse. Within three years, well-received performances at talent shows emboldened her to begin uploading video recordings of acoustic covers spanning genres. Upon graduating from high school, Cara opted to devote a year to music rather than go straight to college. The decision paid off when she signed a major-label recording contract with Def Jam.
Matched up with Andrew "Pop" Wansel, Warren "Oak" Felder, and Coleridge Tillman, among a cast of songwriters and producers with dozens of R&B and pop hits between them, Cara co-wrote and recorded the song "Here" and released it as her debut single in May 2015. Featuring a sample of Isaac Hayes' "Ike's Rap II," previously utilized by Portishead for "Glory Box" and by Tricky for "Hell Is Round the Corner," its streams numbered in the millions prior to the premiere of its official video. A five-track EP, Four Pink Walls, arrived that August, and the full-length Know-It-All followed in November, with the latter entering the Billboard 200 at number nine. All the while, "Here," included on the EP and the album, continued its ascent. The following January, it was certified platinum and topped Billboard's R&B/hip-hop chart, and in February it cracked the Top Five of the Billboard Hot 100. Know-It-All yielded two more platinum singles with "Wild Things" and the body-positive "Scars to Your Beautiful," the latter of which became Cara's second Top Ten Hot 100 hit after she picked up a Juno Award for Breakthrough Artist of the Year. Amid the accolades, Cara branched out with a featured appearance on Troye Sivan's "Wild" and contributed to the soundtrack of Moana with a recording of "How Far I'll Go," written by Lin-Manuel Miranda.
Soundtrack and collaborative work continued in 2017, the year Know-It-All took the Juno for Pop Album of the Year. "Stay," a Zedd collaboration featured in Everything, Everything, became Cara's third Top Ten U.S. pop hit, her first in Canada. "1-800-273-8255," headlined by Logic, was similarly successful in both countries. Grammy nominations, including Song of the Year and Best Music Video for "1-800-273-8255" and Best Pop/Duo Group Performance for "Stay," followed suit. Moreover, Cara was nominated for -- and won -- Best New Artist, awarded when Know-It-All was over two years old. Cara continued to clock studio time with Wansel and Felder, and in June 2018 released the track "Growing Pains," her sixth single to reach the Canadian Top 40. The song was featured on sophomore LP Pains of Growing, which was issued five months later. It hit number 21 on the Canadian album chart and took home the Juno Award for Album of the Year.
In 2019, after collaborating with Juanes on "Querer Mejor," Cara issued her own This Summer EP, featuring the single "Rooting for You." More active in 2020, Cara co-starred in the animated film The Willoughbys -- the soundtrack of which featured her song "I Choose" -- and she released This Summer: Live Off the Floor and Holiday Stuff. In the Meantime, her third proper album, arrived in September 2021. ~ Andy Kellman
