著者について

E. B. White was born in New York in 1899 and died in 1985. He kept animals on his farm in Maine and some of these creatures crept into his books, such as STUART LITTLE which was recently made into a blockbusting film. He received many awards including the Laura Ingalls Wilder Medal in 1970, an award given every five years to authors who have 'made a substantial and lasting contribution to literature for children'.

Garth Williams was born in 1912 and became one of American's best-loved illustrators.
His magical drawings have brought to life many memorable children's book characters, including Fern, Wilbur, and Charlotte inCharlotte's Web and the adventurous little mouse, Stuart Little.
Garth Williams died in 1996, at the age of 84.

生きたい、殺されたくないというテーマと命を奪ってハムソーセージを食べている我々読者。女の子の成長の記述が素晴らしい、そのため当然ながら後半部には女の子は登場しない。そのかわりにネズミの性格が強烈で、これも世の中と、子どもにも現実をみせている。
8歳の女の子にプレゼントしたが何度も読んでいるらしい。8歳の女の子にとって難しいテーマが入っていると思うが成長に必要な本。大人も楽しめる。

良い文章の書き方の指南本である『The Elements of Style (Strunk&White)』の著者の一人であるE.B.Whiteの児童小説で、邦題は『シャーロットのおくりもの』。ウィルバーという名の子豚を屠殺の危機から救うため、シャーロットという名のクモが機知に富んだ救済作戦を次々と決行する。

この本は、児童向けのペーパーバックとして米国で最高部数の売り上げを記録している。また、BBCが評論家たちを対象に行ったアンケートにおいて、児童小説１５０作品中、首位を獲得している。

以下の三つの点で、私は本書が秀逸だと感じた。

1. 牧歌的な農場が舞台でありながら、「屠殺に怯える豚の運命」の不気味な通奏低音が響く。これが｢縦糸｣と｢横糸｣のように物語を重層化している。

2. 本作では｢言葉を話す動物たち｣が登場する。だが大人たちは動物たちの「言葉」を聴くことができず、幼い少女だけが動物の言葉を理解できる。一般的に、子どもは（大人とは異なる）感性に支配された「特殊な世界」を生きている。Whiteの鋭い観察眼は、このことを見抜いていたのだろう。

3. まるで蜘蛛が糸を使って美しい巣を編み上げるように、Whiteはシンプルな言葉を並べてゴージャスな文章を紡ぎ出している（以下の例文参照。私のコメントも付記しました）。

・The barn was very large. It was very old. It smelled of hay and it smelled of manure. It smelled of the perspiration of tired horses and the wonderful sweet breath of patient cows. It often had a sort of peaceful smell---as though nothing bad could happen ever again in the world. It smelled of grain and of harness dressing and of axle grease and of rubber boots and of new rope. And whenever the cat was given a fish-head to eat, the barn would smell of fish. But mostly it smelled of hay, for there was always hay in the great loft up overhead.

“do you realize that if I didn’t catch bugs and eat them, bugs would increase and multiply and get so numerous that they’d destroy the earth, wipe out everything?”
（「ハエを食べること」を非難されたクモのシャーロットが、生態学的な観点から反論している場面。本作に登場する「最も知的な生物」が、人間や動物ではなく、クモであるところが面白い。）

Everywhere you look is life.
（｢どちらを向いても、そこは生命に満ち溢れている｣という意味。短いがゆえにインパクトの強い名文だ。）

Hardly anybody around the farm had a good word to say for a fly. Flies spent their time pestering others. The cows hated them. The horses detested them. The sheep loathed them.
（"The＋動物＋XXX-ed＋them."の｢動物｣と｢XXX｣に「似て非なる言葉｣を代入した三連射が見事だ。）

Wilbur burst into tears. “I don’t WANT to die,” he moaned. “I want to stay alive, right here in my comfortable manure pile with all my friends. I want to breathe the beautiful air and lie in the beautiful sun.”
“You’re certainly making a beautiful noise,” snapped the old sheep.
“I don’t want to die!” screamed Wilbur, throwing himself to the ground.
“You shall not die,” said Charlotte, briskly.

Even men aren’t as good as it as spiders, although they THINK they’re pretty good, and they’ll TRY anything. Did you ever hear of the Queensborough Bridge?”
“What do people catch in the Queensborough Bridge---bugs?” asked Wilbur.
“No,” said Charlotte. “They don’t catch anything. They just keep trotting back and forth across the bridge thinking there is something better on the other side. If they’d hang head-down at the top of the thing and wait quietly, maybe something good would come along. But no---with men it’s rush, rush, rush, every minute. I’m glad I’m a sedentary spider.”

I will show you my masterpiece.”
（"When the morning comes"と言わず、あえてカラフルな表現を万華鏡のように乱舞させて「朝の到来」を表現したmasterpiece（絶品）な文章だ。）

“Winter will pass, the days will lengthen, the ice will melt in the pasture pond. The song sparrow will return and sing, the frogs will awake, the warm wind will blow again. All these sights and sounds and smells will be yours to enjoy, Wilbur---this lovely world, these precious days . . . “
（「春の到来」の躍動が充溢した文章だ。ここでも、Whiteの文学的天才が炸裂している。）

“Why did you do all this for me?” he asked. “I don’t deserve it. I’ve never done anything for you.”
“You have been my friend,” replied Charlotte. “That in itself is a tremendous thing. I wove my webs for you because I liked you. After all, what’s a life, anyway? We’re born, we live a little while, we die. A spider’s life can’t help being something of a mess, with all this trapping and eating flies. By helping you, perhaps I was trying to lift up my life a trifle. Heaven knows anyone’s life can stand a little of that.”

英語の小説を読むときに一番気になるのがその難易度だと思います。
私は少し前に英語の勉強をやり直したところで、
最近はボキャブラリーを増やしたいと思い、小説に手を出し始めたところです。
英語学習用のラダー本では、レベル３から４くらいにいます。

これ位であれば、この本はほとんど辞書を使わずとも内容はわかります。
わからない単語も出てきますが、調べずとも何とか先に進めます。

１頁当たり１個か２個歩かないかくらいではないでしょうか？

難しすぎず、簡単すぎず、
程よい難易度だと思います。

内容もかわいらしくて面白いです。
小学校高学年くらいの本ではないでしょうか？
