90年頃に英国でヒットしたCURVE。打ち込みのハードなリズムとノイジーなディストーションギターに、トニ・ハリディの妖艶なボーカルが絡む楽曲は捨て曲なし！
ずっと前に、レンタルで聞いていいな…と思ったEP作品集。日本では未発売だったのか、今ではほとんど市場に無くなってて、入手できませんでした。今回リーズナブルに購入できて良かった〜。

Pubic Fruit is a collection of early British EP's from the band.
Often times compared to the band Garbage, I can see the resemblances in places; but to me they seem to more often sound like the Jesus and Mary Chain with a female vocalist.

The feel/texture of the songs are quite often ripe with a swirling guitar buried beneath a throbbing rhythmn, the vocals can be described as goth/alternative perhaps, and are to me quite often just another element to the structure of the songs, an instrument in the mix, that you can quite often just get an "oooo" a couple times and it gets the job done. So it's great danceable, somewhat goth tinged, superb music that sounds great late at night, or anytime really. Everything on here sounds like a song you would hear in a dark club late at night/wee hours.

Favs include "No Escape From Heaven", "Coast Is Clear", "Ten Little Girls", and "The Colour Hurts". Classic club tracks from this vastly underrated band from the early 90's.

This is the best Curve material. Edgy, anxious, visceral, exciting...and not over-produced. There are so many gems on here - 'Blindfold', 'The Colour Hurts', 'Clipped', 'Die like a Dog' and 'Galaxy'...The weakest track is the later add-on of 'Fait Accompli', which sounds sanitized and tame in it's over-production. If you like the album 'Doppelganger' then you should love this.

Wäre diese CD nicht gerade gelaufen, als ich in meinem Lieblingsladen in Berlin-Kreuzberg stöberte, hätte ich CURVE wohl nicht entdeckt, denn die "Fachleute" nennen diesen Sound "bigbeat", und in der "Schublade" such ich sonst nie (es klang mir fast, als hätten die späten Cocteau Twins gelernt, mit Drummaschinen und Samplern umzugehen). Wäre sehr schade gewesen, denn was CURVE in den 14 Jahren ihres Schaffens (1990-2004) vorgestellt haben, sprengt alle Schubladen und war wohl seiner Zeit weit voraus. Das ist bester Rock, Superpower-Pop, Wave - nennt es wie ihr wollt; es ist ein toller, sehr origineller Sound.
"Pubic Fruit" heißt das Obst auf dem Cover - es bedeutet etwa "pubertäre Frucht". Denn hier stellten CURVE nochmal ihre ersten 4 EP's zusammen, die allesamt ein Hammer sind (und gar nicht unreif) ! Dean Garcia hat ein unglaubliches Händchen für "punchy" Drum machine programming, das sie dann noch mit Monti's echten Power-Drums ergänzen. So entsteht ein "bigbeat" mit dem auch der bisherige Laie etwas anfangen kann. Darüber schichten sie hochoriginelle Mischungen aus Synthesizern und Samples,und vielen, vielen E-Gitarren (aber nie einfach nur Lärm, sondern immer Melodie- und Harmonieteile, die ein komplexes, oft mächtiges Klanggemälde abgeben). Das ist richtig gutes "songwriting" Handwerk. Untenrum wird das alles abgerundet durch Dean's wuchtig tiefen Bass, und über all dem "surft" die mal fragile, mal energische Stimme von Sängerin Toni Halliday.
Wer CURVE noch nie gehört hat, findet hier einen reich gedeckten Ohrenschmaus.
Als Anspieltipps empfehle ich "Ten little girls" (frisch-frech), "Blindfold" (dunkel-hypnotisch) und "The colour hurts" (was für ein Sound!). Und wenn Du magst, was Du hier hörst, kannst Du bedenkenlos alles nachkaufen, was Du von CURVE findest, denn die Band hält ihr kreatives, erfrischendes Niveau auf allen ihren Werken.
Leider haben sie (zumindest vorerst) ihre Arbeit eingestellt.

Although Pubic Fruit technically is not Curve's first full length CD, it features their earliest music, as it is a compilation of their first three EP's plus an extended version of Fait Accompli. Despite being a compilation, the songs flow together well and there is not a weak track on the disc. Curve's early work is a great mix of thrashing guitars, drum beats, and, of course, Toni Halliday's super sexy vocals. I am a relative newcomer to the music of Curve and I can't get enough of it. I also really like Doppelganger, Cuckoo, Come Clean, and Gift, but Pubic Fruit is my favorite Curve CD, at least for now. It's a crying shame that more people don't know about this great band. Very highly recommended, especially if you like the music of Garbage or of shoegazer bands like Catherine Wheel, Cocteau Twins, Lush, Ride, and Slowdive.
