The singer Mildred Bailey (1907-1951) was one of the biggest stars in America in the 1930s, appearing on numerous radio stations and recording many of the most successful sides of the era. Today, while fellow jazz singer Bille Holiday is given legendary status, Mildred remains less known. This immaculate four disc set providing around five hours of Ms Bailey's work shows this comparison to be totally unfair. She was unable to give a dull performance from ballads, blues and popular songs of the day to novelty numbers like The Weekend of a Private Secretary and Arthur Murray Taught Me Dancing in a Hurry.
Her clear, little girl voice swung every number like the clappers hence the title she and her husband Red Norvo earned as Mr and Mrs Swing. She sang with some of the best jazz musicians of the day like Benny Goodman, the Dorsey Brothers, Coleman Hawkins, Teddy Wilson, Chu Berry and Ben Webster and they all became fans. Above all she made many recordings with Norvo often with superb arrangements by Eddie Sauter.
This collection follows her career from her first recording in 1929 to the 1942 I'll Be Around. There is not a duff track among them. As with all Proper box sets there is an informative booklet (52 pages) giving full details of her career and complete personnel listings.
Mildred Bailey was physically a big lady and hated that (although she was proud of her slim ankles) and it was her weight that gave her medical problems later in her career. She suffered a lot of illness in the 1940s, had a divorce from Norvo and despite all her success died broke, far too early.
This collection shows her at her brightest and best and if I am honest I prefer her performances to Holiday's in the same era, bright, tinged with a light lilt and, as her title suggests, always swinging.
