This is my 5th Gitzo tripod. I clearly have a problem. So what? ;)

Regarding tripods, depending on your photographic needs, you may only need one tripod for the rest of your life... or, you’re like me and may need a few different ones to suit different types of photography that inspire you.
After adopting medium format digital, I needed to upgrade my hiking and everyday tripod. I decided to replace my Gitzo GT1542 Series 1 Mountaineer with this GT3542 Series 3 Mountaineer to better support the extra weight of my GFX 50S.

Allow me to address a couple of the negative reviews specifically, please? (For my actual product review, skip the next 4 paragraphs.) The first person seems to have bought, or otherwise received, an “open box” or used tripod. Misplacing blame toward the manufacturer for an issue with the seller is just wrong. Worse, she could have caused the damage herself by twisting the leg instead of the leg lock or yanked forcefully on the leg section. You don’t have to be gentle with Gitzo tripods but there’s a well-defined line between rugged use and destructive abuse. Let’s give her anecdote the benefit of doubt and assume she got a used, abused tripod instead of new and should’ve addressed the seller, not the manufacturer. In reality, the vast majority of twist-lock tripods all use a similar shim setup to prevent the leg sections from wobbling after tightening, twisting, or simply falling out. A handful do use solid, permanently attached inner bushings but bushings are wear points and a worn bushing is much cheaper than a whole carbon leg section to replace if worn.
For the person complaining about constantly tearing the rubber grips... stop tearing the rubber grips. They are rubber, so excessive heat cycles, extreme cold or extremely dry climates can affect their durability. And like any other rubber product, they do need a very light bit of lubrication added to the surface on occasion to prevent them drying out and becoming brittle. As for replacement, the rubber grips themselves can be purchased and replaced. You can order them from your local Gitzo dealer or from GitzoSpares dot com; buying the whole assembly is not required if buying from a reputable seller. Worst case, even if torn the rubber tread can be glued into place with rubber cement or acrylic adhesive.

Yes, I do understand that Gitzo tripods are on the expensive side and for that money, they shouldn’t suffer from any “defects,” no matter how minor or obscure. Honestly, the cost of Gitzo tripods, and any other top-tier tripod, is relative and, while not cheap, they’re nowhere near the price of some boutique, or low production rate, brands. Even the most expensive of items may have an exposed weakness as every owner will use, maintain and store their items differently with some personal habits revealing some obscure shortcoming.

The TL;DR version: no product performs absolutely perfectly every time for every person, plus lemons do happen. Anecdotally speaking, I personally have never torn a rubber grip on any of my Gitzo tripods, but when it comes to anecdotes, no one experience is “more right” than another.

What’s most important is to temper your expectations and to give all reviews, especially those with excessive praise or are unfairly critical. However, if you’re reading this then you’re one of the more hyper-intelligent and preternaturally perceptive consumers who knows how to correctly judge a wide range of reviews to facilitate your superior ability to choose products from an online shopping experience. This part of my review is clearly not aimed at you as these are techniques you’ve long since perfected.

Ok, back to the review of my new tripod: I decided to get the GT3542 Series 3 for a few reasons. It’s not much heavier than the Series 2. I would’ve preferred the GT3542L, the version with longer legs and a height of 70” versus 64” but I also own a GT3543LS Systematic Series 3. Surprise, surprise, I knew the legs were interchangeable, so I’m able to use the Systematic legs on my new Mountaineer and get the extra height, plus the versatility of both sets of legs, while saving over $150.
The GT3542 has a 60mm base plate, accommodating my Arca-Swiss p0 head and Novoflex panning base without any fuss. Lastly, the Traveler series only goes up to Series 2 and while it packs down shorter, it has a larger diameter with the legs folded up or down when compared to the Mountaineer, as it has to accommodate for the width of the ball head. Plus, the Mountaineer has 3 leg angle positions while the Traveler has only 2, a 2 piece center column that’s more convenient than the Traveler’s separate full column and stubby column. Bottom line, the Mountaineer packs down thinner, is about the same height as the Traveler when legs are folded downward when used without the center column, is more versatile with the drop column for ground level shots and has 3 leg angle positions.
The Systematic is great but it’s big and heavy, only going outside when I need to use a gimbal for birds, instead of a monopod, but otherwise stays at home for macros and overhead shots using a boom arm. My Series 1 GT1555T Traveler is a bit undersized for my GFX, but works great with my X-H1, and is excellent for around town when I need something larger than a tabletop tripod. It also comes in handy when I plan to hike for more than 10+ miles round trip.
However, for the vast majority of uses, anytime I leave home and may need a set of sticks, the Mountaineer is the tripod I always take with me due to its ideal blend of size, weight, stability and versatility.

This Gitzo GT3542 Mountaineer Series 3, especially with my long legs on it, will suit me perfectly for 75% of the times I leave home with my camera and a tripod. If you use a larger camera, like the Canon 5D, Nikon D850, LUMIX S1R or Leica S2 and a 70-200mm, 100-400mm or larger tele lenses on occasion, you’ll most likely agree that the Gitzo GT3542 Mountaineer is the perfect blend of size, weight, stability and convenience. There are some excellent brands that make excellent tripods in this price range and size bracket, but of all of the competition, Gitzo has been doing it the longest.

Absolute junk. Was delivered with broken leg stop. When I opened it the bottom leg section fell out with the cheap plastic stop broken in two pieces. I still can't believe they get $1000 for this. It's not worth $50. The twist locks are also the worse I've ever used. They stick and do not operate smoothly at all. I've been buying tripods for 40 years and this is the worst. Hard to believe Vitec puts up with it. Manfrotto is a much better product. Manfrotto's flip locks are much better than the cheap twist locks on this Gimmickzo.
