The middle title among the triad of seasoned-but-not-depleted mid-'80s Replacements albums, Tim isn't as inspired as its predecessor, Let It Be, nor as involving as its successor, Pleased to Meet Me. Still, it's the work of a wondrous foursome near the peak of its powers, and, as collections of songs go, it may be Paul Westerberg's crowning achievement. "Kiss Me on the Bus," "Swinging Party," and "Here Comes a Regular" pretty much set the standard for the sloppy-drunk college-rock romanticism of the '80s. "Bastards of Young," "Lay It Down Clown," and "Left of the Dial" proved that the hard-charging Midwesterners were still scamps at heart...or at least could still fake it. This is the last album made by the original quartet (the excesses that would lead to guitarist Bob Stinson's early death prompted his dismissal after Tim came out) and provides a key to understanding the appeal of an astonishing band that did everything right except figure out how to become stars. --Steven Stolder

すごくいい。リプレイスメンツのアルバムの中で、ベスト3に入ります。いい曲が並んでいて、ポップで聴きやすいですし、名曲もありますね。

この曲を初めて聞いた時、鳥肌が立ちました。
60年代後期のロックバンド黄金期の有名なギターリフを持つ曲達に匹敵しているナンバーだと思います。気がつけば「We are the sons of no one, bastards of young!」と歌ってしまいます。名曲！
大好きなHold My Lifeで颯爽と幕を開け、誤解を恐れずに言うと50年代ロックンロールに敬意を表しながらオリジナルメンバー最後のバンドサウンドを聴かせてくれます。
サウンド的にボブ脱退以後と明らかに違うのはギターリフへのユニゾンが多目のアレンジでしょうか。ボブのリクエストだったのかな。。。ちょっとガレージっぽさが残っているのも何とも言えない味わいがあります。
これ以後はポールのソロ作と呼んでもいい（実際にそういう流れもあったらしい）作品群になりますが、Don't Tell A Soulまではドラムがクリス一人だったりするのでリプレイスメンツ名義でも違和感はないんですが。
美しく切ない名曲アコギナンバー Here Comes a Regularでアルバムは幕を閉じます。
みんなBastards of Youngだった。。。

前々作(HOOTENANNY)、前作(LET IT BE)で済ませ、

本格的にウェスターバーグ節を完成させたのが本作。

本作からインディーのTwin/Toneから

メジャーのSireへとレーベル移籍しております。

MATS史上最高の名曲、といっても差し支えないと思われる

Bastards of Youngを筆頭に

前作以上に冴え渡るポールの作曲能力に

完全にやられてしまいました。

この後、ギターのボブが抜け、3枚のアルバムを残しますが

この作品が「バンド」としてのMATSの最高傑作だと思います。

This album is number two on my top 5 favorite albums of all time. Mostly because I find the music to be epic, fun and very moving as well. "Left Of The Dial" is one of my favorite songs of all time and is widly considered the ultimate college rock anthem. Plus, the lyrics are really great as well. Some other great tracks are "Bastards Of Young" which is one of the most defining songs of generation x in my mind. Also, "Hold My Life" which has amazing vocal work by Paul Westerberg. "Kiss Me On The Bus" is one of the more poppy songs on the album and is fun to sing along with. "Swingin' Party" and "Little Mascara" are beautiful. "Here Comes A Regular" is one of my favorite bittersweet ballads of all time and it also includes the best piano solo ever. Even some of the heavier tracks like "Lay It Down Clown" are unique, fun and more blues driven then the tracks on Sorry Ma, Forgot To Take Out The Trash.

I can understand why bands like The Goo Goo Dolls and Green Day take so much influence from this band. The Mats wrote some of the most inspired music to come out of the undergroud in the 80s and 90s and in my mind should have been bigger and more popular than Nirvana. This is great music and not to be missed. I think that anyone can like The Mats if they give them a try. From the fast and sudden opening of "Hold My Life" to the lovely final fade out of "Here Comes A Regular", this album is a masterpiece!!
