The Power of Habit: Why We Do What We Do in Life and Business
OVER 60 WEEKS ON THE "NEW YORK TIMES "BESTSELLER LIST
With a new Afterword by the author
In "The Power of Habit, "Pulitzer Prize-winning business reporter""Charles Duhigg takes us to the thrilling edge of scientific discoveries that explain why habits exist and how they can be changed. Distilling vast amounts of information into engrossing narratives that take us from the boardrooms of Procter & Gamble to sidelines of the NFL to the front lines of the civil rights movement, Duhigg presents a whole new understanding of human nature and its potential. At its core, "The Power of Habit" contains an exhilarating argument: The key to exercising regularly, losing weight, being more productive, and achieving success is understanding how habits work. As Duhigg shows, by harnessing this new science, we can transform our businesses, our communities, and our lives.

1 cue : habit
2 routine : habit
組織(会社など)にもhabit(組織体質、企業文化など)がある。
具体的には、cue(お客様からのクレーム、製造機械の故障、事故の発生…)

I picked up this book because it was highly endorsed by two other books I loved, i.e. “Principles: Life and Work” by Ray Dalio, and “Thinking in Bets” by Annie Duke.
The mechanics that the book exhorts is a simple 3-step ‘habit loop’ (p.19), which is “a formula our brain automatically follows: When I see CUE, I will do ROUTINE in order to get a REWARD.” (p.297). The trick is to recognize these stages, and harness them to your advantage.
I’ve started immediately applying these mechanics in my personal life, to great results (so far).
As a ‘cue’, I’ve placed a ziploc in my closet. That set off a whole new ‘routine’ for me. When I come home after work, I see the ziploc. The ‘cue’ serves me to automatically get changed, and go for a jog. When I return from the run, I grab the ziploc, put my smartphone in it, and take a bath and do a 10-15 minute meditation with Headspace app in the bath. After the ‘routine’ of jogging and meditation, I get a ‘reward’ of being relaxed & clear-headed.
This ‘keystone habit’ (p.109) may serve me well to produce a cascade of other beneficial changes in my life, such as higher productivity at work, better relationships, etc.
I may be overstating the case when I quote this testimonial, but by harnessing the power of ‘habit loop’, “you start to believe you can achieve almost anything...now I feel like I’m finally in control” (p.280).
The book may transform your life.

Definitely recommend!
So much of thought has gone into the way it’s structured to keep the reader engrossed and stay put.
One of the very rarest book I’ve finished reading within 3-4 days. ( if you are a regular reader it will only take you 4-5 hrs even if it’s not a skim reading.) The printing and the fonts forces you to finish reading the book 📕.
Kudos to penguin publishers!. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
