Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to"a wonderful faraway place. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years.The BFG is dedicated to the memory of Roald Dahls eldest daughter, Olivia, who died from measles when she was seven – the same age at which his sister had died (fron appendicitis) over forty years before. Quentin Blake, the first Children’s Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl’s children’s books.

The language of the book is NOT English. but some foreign language. The product description did not mention that anywhere. I purchased it as a gift to somebody. It was a bad experience.

Wanted the Welsh not the English version!!! Five stars for the story only!

Matilda is a great story. You'd be daft not to give the story five stars. But this selling area needs serious sorting out. I read with interest the comments re: language as unlike many of those frustrated below I was actually looking for a Welsh language version of the book to accompany my daughter this coming World Book Day. My family understand, speak, read and write in the Welsh language. Hilariously, because I purchased from a seller and not Amazon direct the copy I received is in English! (I say hilariously but you must remember I'm nearly £5 out of pocket and a few days before WBD I am down a book in the language of choice.)

Something needs to be done here. My seller has placed a statement about language that I cannot deny is clear when you view via the web browser but its less clear from the Amazon app & when buying in haste possibly slightly harassed by toddlers and other family. I was also strongly influenced by the many disappointed comments left by those who had clicked to purchase the English version and instead received the Welsh.

So, my advice. Read and enjoy Matilda, it's great. But if you want the book, in English, Welsh or any other of the many wonderful languages of the world, tread very carefully here. Independent booksellers and handling the thing yourself may very well be the best course of action!
