Roald Dahl (1916-1990) was born in Llandaff, South Wales, and went to Repton School in England. His parents were Norwegian, so holidays were spent in Norway. As he explains in Boy, he turned down the idea of university in favor of a job that would take him to"a wonderful faraway place. In 1933 he joined the Shell Company, which sent him to Mombasa in East Africa. When World War II began in 1939 he became a fighter pilot and in 1942 was made assistant air attaché in Washington, where he started to write short stories. His first major success as a writer for children was in 1964. Thereafter his children's books brought him increasing popularity, and when he died children mourned the world over, particularly in Britain where he had lived for many years.The BFG is dedicated to the memory of Roald Dahls eldest daughter, Olivia, who died from measles when she was seven – the same age at which his sister had died (fron appendicitis) over forty years before. Quentin Blake, the first Children’s Laureate of the United Kingdom, has illustrated most of Roald Dahl’s children’s books.

　実にユーモアたっぷりで、章が進めば進むほど話の内容にぐぐっと引き込まれますね。
その面白さについては他の方のコメントに書いてあるとおりです。

　私は今回この英文を精読してみました。１章ごとに、まず素読（速読）し大意を掴み、
次にじっくり読んで、意味の分からない単語や語句、節などに鉛筆でｱﾝﾀﾞｰﾗｲﾝを引きます。
紙面の空白部に訳を書き込むのですが、ページ毎にもう真っ黒になってしまいました。
それほどに私の語彙力の無さには我ながら辟易しました。

　ともあれ作者のロアルド・ダール氏に敬意を表し一言一句、前置詞１個にいたるまで
こだわってできるだけ正確に訳してみることにしました。
そうすると簡単な単語の組み合わせが、全然意味が理解できていないことに気づいたのです。
つまりそれらは組み合わさって熟語や慣用句になっていたんですね。
　例えば６章の最後の方、no good can ever come from spoiling a child like that という
文ですが意味がちんぷんかんぷん。電子辞書の英和大辞典でも英辞郎辞書にも該当がなく、
結局ググって重箱の隅をつつくようにして出てきた訳が「no good can ever come from
doing---：---していい訳がない」というものでした。アメリカ語的慣用句だそうです。
　これはほんの一例ですがあまり使わない単語や熟語、慣用句が結構あります。
食べる（飲むなど）関連でも、eat,nibble,lick,munch,taste,suck,try,gorge,lap,pop,
guzzle,drink,feed,feast,chewとあります。（全て文中に出てきた単語）

　文章自体は児童文学ですが、あくまでEnglish Native向けなので日本人にとって必ずしも
易しいとはいえません。文法的には高校英語程度だと思います。語彙的にはそれ以上。
もちろん簡単な文章もありますが（初っ端がそれ）。だいたい読めたというのは実は
ほとんど理解できていないと思います。
　文体の特徴としては分詞構文を多用していますが、意味の違いがいろいろありますので
今一度文法書を確認しておきました。これは長文を形成しますのでなかなか読むのに骨の
折れるものです。他の方のように中学英語でスイスイ読めて理解できる、とはいかないで
すね。もし数あるコメントを見て僕は（私は）無理だと落胆された方は気落ちする必要
はありません。ましてや辞書なしで全てが理解できるものではありません。
特にOompa Loompasが歌う歌の歌詞がすごく難しいです。ちょっとやそっとでは訳せません。

　英語的表現で面白いのは２３章のSquare Sweets That Look roundですね。
ここのところは日本語で翻訳したって面白くもなんともないです。訳としては１．丸く
見える四角いお菓子　２．（キョロキョロと）辺りを見回す四角いお菓子、
の２通りの訳なんですが、look round が持つ独特の意味が誤解を生み、何か漫才を聞いて
いるようコミカルな章になっています。読んでみないと雰囲気はわかりませんが。
なお、Sweetsはイギリス版で、アメリカ版はCandiesとなっています。どちらもざっくりと
「お菓子」と訳します。

　ちなみにPuffin Bookにはイギリス版とアメリカ版があります。私はその両方を持って
いますが、文章自体に違いはありません。相違点は慣用的に使う単語の違いです。例えば
歩道：sidewalk(米),pavement(英)、rubbishとgarbageの区別など。決定的に違うのは、
Charlieが拾うお金のことです。１０章にありますが、(米)It was a dollar bill!「１ドル
札だ！」、(英)It was a fifty-pence piece!「50ﾍﾟﾝｽ硬貨（銀貨）だ！」となっています。
なお、Quentin Blake の挿絵では、Charlieが丸いお金(硬貨)を持ってチョコを買っています。
ところでジョニー･デップ主演の映画では10ドル札でしたかね。

　Amazonの販売しているPuffin BookのＣＤ付き本ですが、驚いたことに本はイギリス版なの
ですが、ナレーターが話しているのはアメリカ版の方なのです。1ドル札です。
もっともナレーター自身はイギリス人で発音はイギリス英語です。私は本を両方を持っている
ので気づきましたが、ちょっとこれでは困りますね。うろたえること必至です。

　ということでせっかく買ったCharlie and the Chocolate Factory じっくりゆっくり
おいしく味わおうではありませんか！

Why I chose this book was that I do not like bad end and I like the story that make people happy, and when I looked for such book, I found this book. It is said very happy and funny, so I chose it.

Charlie Bucket is a very common boy, but he is a very happy boy. He like chocolate very much, but his family is very poor. They live with Mr. Bucket's income, and they can not buy even enough foods, so Charlie was always hungry. Therefore he can eat chocolate only once a year when is his birth day.
The city where they live in has the big chocolate factory that is owned by Willy Wonka. One day big news was rushed that five children who get “Golden Tickets” are allowed to visit that chocolate factory. Moreover, one of them can get special present. “Golden Tickets” were hidden wrapping paper of Wonka's chocolate was which are sold all over the world, and there are only five tickets all over the world. Since his birth day was following week, he could challenge, but he could not get “Golden Tickets”. Several days later, he found silver coin which buried in the snow. Since he was very hungry, he bought a chocolate and ate it. Then, something flashing appeared “Golden Ticket” ! This is how Charlie can visit the chocolate factory.
Accidents were happened while guide tour. There were five children who got “Golden Ticket”, but everyone, apart from Charlie, had accidents and retired so that Charlie won special present which was right of the chocolate factory. His family move to it, and live happily.

I want to recommend this story for depressed people because Charlie was just a lucky person. He is very gentle and kind so that this book suggests that happiness surely comes to fine persons. Read it, and it makes feelings fine. However, it has frightening expression while the scene that children had accidents. Therefore, if readers do not like such a scene, I do not recommend it. Also, since it is for children, it is very clear for everyone. So I recommend it for beginners who read English books.

I rate this story nice because it was very clear and funny, but it had little sophisticated punch. I think that in this story, Charlie always be lucky, so that the story was a little monotonous. I like happy end, but I think that if this story has accidents to Charlie, it will be more interesting.
Next, I want to read fantasy because Charlie and the Chocolate factory is filled with dream and I want more dream. I trained reading English book by this book, next time I want to a little more difficult story.

This has been a good first grade reader. Homework requires 10 minutes of reading daily and that works out to be about 2-3 chapters a day. The chapters are short. Cute sketches are included as well. Some difficult vocabulary but not much, son is able to read aloud independently (6 years old, soon to be 7) with little correction or assistance. Mostly requires help with names. There is no real distinction of what makes this the "Golden Edition" other than the cover, doesn't seem to include anything special either. A great book and with the recent Wonka movie, a great bridge to the content. While reading, we did introduce the original Willy Wonka and the Chocolate factory movie starring Gene Wilder as a frame of reference to help with the names and flow of the story which in the early chapters involves backstory development and we have found helps our young, developing reader make visual connections and recall details.

A fun book. Well loved and timeless. Would recommend! Will follow up with 2 other books in the Charlie Bucket series, including a scheduled new release this Summer.
