人類最強のサバイバルチャレンジャーであるベア・グリルスとガーバーのコラボなので欲しくて堪らず衝動買いしました。日本人の手には多少大きく感じるかと思います。別に買ったフォールディングタイプはブレード半分にセレーションがありますがこれは直刃です。フルタングでは無いようですが強度はありそうです。ファイヤースターターを当てるブレードの背は少し磨かれておりエッジが立っていて発火させやすくなっています。シースも無骨でカッコいい！

手にして見ると意外と大きかったです！ダンボールも普通に切れました。それ以上の斬れ味は自分で研げばそれなりに良くなると思います。

付属のメタルマッチも何回かやってティッシュに火を付けれました。
買って損は無いです！

キャンプ用に買いました。シースにファイアースターターも内蔵されています。シースもプラスチックなので水濡れや水没も気になりませんしロックもしっかりしています。

きたときはハンマーの部分に接着材見たいなのが少しありましたがヤスリで削って落としましたので少し残念でしたが問題なかったです。しかし箱入っていたんですが箱がボロボロでした一度破いたような感じでしたが新品と書いていたので安心しました。さっそく使ってみましたが、切れ味はまぁーまぁーでしたが魚は刃をとげばうまく切れると思います。裏についているシャープナーは目が荒いので非常に使うような感じです。私はベアグリルスが好きだしサバイバルをするのが好きなので非常に使いやすいナイフだとおもいました！私てきにはベアグリルスアルティメットナイフよりはこっちの方が作業をしやすいと思います。最後に私てきには☆5つのとてもいいナイフでした。切れ味がいい刃がくるかは商品しだいだと思います。

バトニング用として購入しました。
直刃のナイフで刃付けは悪くありませんが少し歪みがありますが使用には問題ありません。(これは評価に含めていません)

使ってみて無茶なバトニングをしなければまず折れないと思います。
ケースが若干チープな感じがするのでその点だけはいただけません。

Top Survival-Kombi-Messer - absolut empfehlenswert !

Dieses Messer hat mich gleich begeistert, als ich es in meine Hand nahm.
Der Griff des Messers ist gummiert, super griffig und hat alle Formungen um immer bestmöglich Zupacken zu können.
Sei es zum Stoßen, zum Hacken, zum Spalten eines Stammes, zum Aufschneiden usw.
Die Klinge ist bei mir superscharf. Ich kann damit Papier und Kartonage problemlos schneiden. Das Messer geht problemlos durch.
Die Hammerfunktion am Messerende macht auch einen sehr massiven Eindruck.
Die Klinge ist mit seinen 12 cm ausreichend lang und mit seinen 12 cm noch im "legalen Bereich". ;)
Ich hatte lange überlegt ob ich mir das etwas günstigere Messer vom gleichen Typ mit Wellenschliff holen soll, weil ich damit evtl. mehr Einsatzmöglichkeiten hätte (Sägefunktion).
Nach einiger Recherche im Internet habe ich aber davon Abstand genommen und dieses hier gekauft.
Der Wellenschliff wäre zu lang und ein sauberes Schneiden mit langer Schnittkante war mir dann doch wichtiger.
Insbesondere, wenn man mal nachschleifen muss. Das wird bei Wellenschliff wohl sehr schwierig werden.
Außerdem hat das Topmesser von Gerber aus dieser "BG-Serie" auch keinen Wellenschliff mehr. Das hat man sich wohl auch gut überlegt.
Dieses Messer hier ist übrigens auch der Nachfolger von dem anderen Messer mit Wellenschliff. Damit war für mich die Entscheidung klar.
Somit bin ich mit meiner Entscheidung im Nachhinein zufrieden.
Es macht wirklich Spass mit diesem wuchtigen Messer zu "hantieren" ;) Es ist schon recht massiv und hat Gewicht, man kann somit beim Hacken eines Astes ordentlich Wucht auf den Ast ausüben. Die Haptik ist klasse.
Ach ja, diese Pfeife, die am Messerende rumbaumelte hat mich von der Positionierung gestört. Ich habe die Pfeife nun mit seinem Band an dem Feuerstahl befestigt und dann die Pfeife hinter dem Klettverschluss oben fixiert (siehe Bild).
Perfekt somit gelöst, denn 1.) der Feuerstahl kann nun nicht verloren gehen, 2.) die Pfeife stört nicht bei der Benutzung des Messer, 3.) Pfeife selbst geht nicht verloren und 4.) das Messer in der Scheide sieht nun "aufgeräumt" aus ;))

Mag sein, dass es bessere Survivalmesser gibt, aber dieses hier ist sehr vielseitig und deckt für mich alle wichtigen Punkte sehr gut ab.
Auch die Möglichkeit, dieses Messer mittels den insgesamt 3 Löchern im Schaft zusammen mit einem langen Ast und mit Schnur zu einem Speer umzubauen, finde ich wichtig um sich evtl. gegen Tiere verteidigen zu können oder zum Speerwerfen bei einer Jagd ;))

Somit von mir volle 5 Sterne. Klare Kaufempfehlung und für den Preis von unter 60 EUR eine absolut wertige und preisgerechte Anschaffung für
künftige Outdooraktivitäten (incl. Wanderungen, wobei das recht hohe Gewicht nachteilig ist).

This knife is a very good all rounder knife for people who use knives for camping, bush crafting, hunting, fishing and any outdoor/indoor activities. The quality of the knife is superb, especially for the price you pay for. No matter what the sale price is, if it is under or around $60 then it is worth the buy (no more than $60 because the official Gerber site sells it for $62). This knife is not the best knife you can get, it is not of the same quality as some of the TOP knives in the world which easily go for more than a few hundred dollars ($200+). This knife is a perfect knife for doing multiple tasks with all its built in features etc. The knife alone is very strong, sturdy and durable. The fact that it comes with extra features such as a whistle, firesteel, sharpening stone, are almost like bonus features to have on the knife. The knife alone is worth paying for, and the fact that it comes with extra features makes it more the reason to purchase this knife. Highly recommend this knife as it will do the job for almost anyone. A knife is just a cutting tool. One does not need to spend over $100 for a knife in my opinion. Sure the $100+ knives will have a better steel and last longer, but that still does not mean that it cannot be lost. Also, the bear grylls knife steel is very strong as well. It is as good as any good quality knife. HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS KNIFE. It is a well thought out, well designed knife.

A good, stout backpacking piece of kit

Review from a backpackers point of view.

Overall, the approach to the kit is excellent. Solid blade, stone to touch it up, fire starter, and a whistle. That's a lot of love and insurance.

As of June 2012, the reviews of the sharpness as delivered are correct - will do the job but not majesticly sharp. Some work with Chef's Choice 440 2-Stage Manual Sharpener got it where I like it, which is roughly kitchen blade sharp.

In my backpacking application, this will cut salami, work a fish, make fuzz sticks, etc. I view this as an all-around utility knife to support the utility of the multi tool as a system.

The orange accents are nice for visibility. Like others, it made sense to move the whistle down to the bottom of the sheath and have some orange cord through the pommel.

Can't imagine ever being in a situation where I would need to baton wood. Nice to know I could if I miscalculated and got myself in a pickle.

The serrated version is much more aggressive. Own that as well. If I was distance hiking in a small group through the Montana wilderness or doing anything solo, I would choose the serrated version. Anything East Coast, AT related, car camping, or where I knew other hikers would be around, this is a great choice.

End of day, and in my opinion, this is a solid blade and a well thought out set of backups.

**UPDATE AUGUST 2013**
Went on a 9-day backpacking and day hike vacation in Alaska, ranging from Denali to the Kenai Peninsula.

Down in Hope, AK, we bought a bundle of fire wood from the camp attendant. No dry kindling was available, so we started battoning kindling off a piece of firewood. We decided to really test the blade and if it broke, so be it. Wanted the experience. The knife held up well, and did the job just fine. The edge of the blade was pretty nicked up after that, and I think that's to be expected. We were beating on it - not trying to break it, but just use as intended. Touched up the edge on the sharpening stone.

Used the rod and back of knife to start the fire.

So we got to really test the whole kit out, and I'm pretty pleased.

The stone on the sheath is pretty aggressive, and to be fair, this is a "survival" kit. It did the job when we needed it to. When I got home and sharpened the blade, it was usable for backpacking purposes, but pretty rough. And that's using a manual sharpener for kitchen knives, where you feel every catch on a blade.

It re-sharpened just fine.

Conclusion: The kit simply worked as advertised. Recommended.

5 year update: my go-to fixed blade for around the house and outdoor recreation. Thick blade has been a great feature for light prying. In winter it hangs by my wood stove for batonning kindling. Yeah it’s made in China but Gerber defines the specifications and ensured quality control. I own the Prodigy also but prefer the strait edge of this model.
This is the excellent Gerber Prodigy re-branded for BG in a fine edge configuration. This is a great package of tools (knife, sheath, sharpener, fire steel, whistle) at a very fair price. This replaces my serrated Prodigy as my primary outdoors knife for the following reasons:
Small, light. Blade size is perfect for me, small and light enough to 'disappear' on my belt, but large enough to split wood. Any larger and the sheath would be obtrusive around the camp site and I might not have it on me when really needed.
Fine, stainless edge. My previous Prodigy was serrated, but the serrations are easily damaged and difficult to sharpen. This fine edge with a single angle bevel is easy to sharpen in the field. I prefer a low maintenance stainless blade so I know it will be in good condition when I need it.
Thick blade. Suitable for light prying.
Integrated fire steel and sharpener. Very comforting to know I have a source of ignition. Same with the sharpener integrated into the sheath.
I moved the whistle to the bottom of the sheath from the knife itself.
Overall this is an excellent package in a light survival knife for general camp use and, if needed, survival tasks such as building a shelter and starting a fire. I carry it with a belt pouch containing an equipped to survive kit Adventure Medical Kits Pocket Survival Pak Plus and a mylar sleeping bag Mylar Emergency Survival Sleeping Bag (PACKAGE OF 2) for Survival Kit
