Few piano trios in jazz can match the subtle interaction of Fred Hersch's group with long-time bassist Drew Gress and drummer Nasheet Waits. It's the ideal context for Hersch's free-flowing invention and welling, impassioned lyricism, with Gress adding an empathetic counter-line or Waits a quiet explosion of snare and cymbal that will feed or celebrate Herschs line of thought. While Hersch is frequently compared to the late Bill Evans, he's sublimated the influence to craft a distinctly personal style, apparent here on the luminous depths of "How Deep Is the Ocean" or the sparkling runs of his own "Rhythm Spirit." Whatever the tempo, each piece develops interactive layers of meaning with a feeling that's almost like dance. Hersch has also found a distinctly original approach to Thelonious Monk, reinventing "Boo Boo's Birthday" and "Misterioso" in ways that reflect Monks genius while finding new possibilities in familiar tunes. --Stuart Broomer

銀河の欠片が光を帯びるHerschのピアニズム

緊張感のあるスリリングなドラムは好みの分かれる
ところですが、Herschの耽美で儚さの中に滋味が
あるピアニズムは健在。嬉しくなります。
闇を手探りしていると次第に輪郭が見えてくる様な、
やっと手に入れた大切な物。
美しさの中に幽玄の余情を秘めたHerschの想い。
Monkの曲が２曲入っているのも良いですね。
繊細で力強いHerschにピッタリです。
Herschオリジナル、Heartlandもスタンダード、
How Deep Is the oceanも良い出来です。
漆黒の夜、Herschのピアノで銀河の欠片が淡く光を帯びます。

聴き込むとやんちゃなドラマーが予定調和に陥らせず、聴き終わると
またリピートしてしまうスルメ盤になりました。

In questo cd Hersh,in trio con Gress (bass) e Waits (drums) affianca standards senza tempo a sue composizioni originali. Predomina un lirismo crepuscolare (titolo dell'opera molto azzeccato), sorretto da una tecnica indiscutibile. I due compagni assecondano il pianista senza mai strafare, con un buon interplay. Alcune ballads spiccano per la splendida esecuzione, sorretta da una notevole partecipazione emotiva ("how deep is the ocean" su tutte). Un disco consigliato agli amanti del piano jazz trio, ma anche a chi desidera ascoltare ottima musica, chiudendo gli occhi e rilassandosi a luci spente, magari in una notte di primavera.... Fred Hersch, toujours peu reconnu, nous distille une musique délicate, profonde et d'une précision diabolique.
Ses deux compères sont à la hauteur, il ne saurait en être autrement pour produire un grand disque. Le druming de Nasheet Waits est étonnant, c'est un batteur auquel il est impératif de s'intéresser.
Durant tout le disque, les surprises sont au rendez-vous, Fred Hersch nous ballade dans son univers merveilleux et on se laisse volontier embarquer tant c'est agréable. Les émotions sont nombreuses.

Bref, un chef d'oeuvre de plus à mettre à l'actif de ce pianiste.

"Night & The Music" ist eines der besten Trio-Alben, das ich bis jetzt gehört habe. Fred Hersch beweist mit dieser Trio-Aufnahme einmal mehr, was für ein Virtuose er ist. Schon im Opener "So in love" bekommt man den vielschichtigen und äusserst gefühlvollen Klang dieses Pianisten zu hören, mit dem er Klassikern wie diesem und anderen (Eigen-)Kompositionen behutsam seinen eigenen Stempel aufdrückt. Wer aufmerksam hinhört, dem wird klar, dass Hersch sich intensivst mit den Stücken, die er spielt, auseinandersetzt. Sein Spiel ist melodisch, harmonisch und rhythmisch in jeder Hinsicht hohes Niveau. Auch die Eigenkompositionen sind erstklassig und reihen sich nahtlos zwischen den interpretierten Standards ein. Mein persönlicher Favorit ist hierbei "Gravity's Pull", ein Stück das durch seine Athmosphäre und eingängige Melodie überzeugt.
"Night & The Music" ist erstklassiger Jazz, den ich jedem aufmerksamen Zuhörer wärmstens empfehlen kann.
