It's been said that Tim Buckley was the most powerful singer of his generation. Even if that appraisal forgets Bob Dylan, the live set Dream Letter makes a hell of a defence. At the very least, his voice could do things few could: it soared beyond any familiar register and held notes long past the breaking point. He learned from jazz vocalists such as Sarah Vaughn, but he put technical prowess into the service of a strange, trance-like state. On this evening, before a hushed, receptive audience, he seemed to be composing visionary poetry with every vocal surge. Creating an Astral Weeks-like sound, his band included Lee Underwood on guitar, David Friedman on vibes and Danny Thompson on bass. Goodbye and HelloやHappy Sadなどスタジオ盤も悪くないのですが、ビブラフォンとアコギ弾き語りのシンプルな編成のこのライブ盤のほうは曲そのものの魅力、彼の声の魅力がダイレクトに伝わってくる気がします（もっともスタジオ盤もシンプルですが）。彼の後期の作品群は別にして、入門編にはこれでも良いかと思います。

この人の作品の中では、一番のおすすめです。彼にとっては、初期の集大成的なライブアルバムです。初期の名曲満載です。

「ハッピー・サッド」以降彼の作風は、急速にサイケ・アシッド・フォーク（ダウナー傾向強い）、長尺ジャズ化していきますが、ここでは簡潔にロマンチックなフォークとして完成の域に達しています。かれのキャリアの中では最初のピークでしょう。

彼にとっては、１９６８年の英国デビューが非常に重要なイヴェントだったような気がしますね。これ以降作風が変わりました。

ブルージーなサイケ・ファンには次の「ブルー・アフターヌーン」、「ロルカ」、「スター・セイラー」をおすすめしますが、ビギナーの方には、聴き通すには、少々キツイかもしれません。

これはひどい。汚いデジタル処理なジャケも残念だが、なにより音飛びがひどい。
特に２枚目。盤面はきれいなので、なんだか理由はわからんが、とにかくがっかりです。
マスターの問題ですか…。

There are many tim buckley Live albums out there, some very good, but none compared to this. His voice is in tip top condition, recorded as it was, before the drugs took hold. The quality of the recording considering it was recorded back in 1968 is also superb. The big selling point though is the handful of songs on here that either didn't make it to his studio albums or not in this form. Enjoy

As wondrous as Tim Buckley's studio albums were, the live recordings seem to go even deeper in feeling & power of expression. Nowhere is this more evident than on the opus DREAM LETTER, as Buckley was moving towards a jazzier & more experimental style of writing & singing — to me, his most rapturous & compelling period. Like one of his major inspirations, Miles Davis, Buckley was never one to stand still; he was constantly changing, taking in new possibilities & making something stunningly resonant out of them. And for such a short life, he was astonishingly prolific.

DREAM LETTER brings all of those qualities together in a magical concert, one in which he reimagines some of his well-known songs, while introducing new ones as well. It's interesting that for someone so intense while singing, his between-song patter reveals a certain nervousness & shyness. It's as if he only truly became himself in the heart of song itself. For those who haven't heard him yet but wonder about the rarified praise he still receives decades after his death, this should reveal everything you need to know. Most highly recommended!
