有料で見ることもなかった。
何が悪いってわけでもないのだが、起伏がなくめちゃめちゃ退屈です。
いつ本題に入るのかと待ち続けているうちに終了する。
（だるすぎて、途中で２度も一時停止して、料理とお風呂した。）
唯一の見どころはワイヤーのあれだが、それもよく考えたら、わざわざあんな手間のかかる、しかも確実性のない方法をとる必然性がないよね。
キャメロン・ディアスもよく受けたこと。
そしてたとえが適切でないわ。水槽にはりつくのはアワビでしょ。

It's Ridley Scott & Cormac Mccarthy at their darkest and best, and it's certainly not for the feint of heart. I understand why the critics panned it so passionately: it's a horrific, ugly take on humanity and depravity. Mccarthy never holds back when it comes to painting a very clear picture of just how evil people can be, and the evil people in this film rank right up the with the infamous Judge in his great novel Blood Meridian.

The counselor has a very sweet fiancé and needs money, so he goes in on a drug deal--a fact that he hides from her. He himself isn't a sweet guy; his fiancé doesn't really know him at all. The first half of the movie reveals to the viewer just what a thoughtless, arrogant, and careless man he is: he refuses to see that he's messing with the wrong people. Even though the clues are strewn everywhere in great abundance, he ignores them and goes in on the drug deal. His friend Reiner is a stupid cad, and his girlfriend Malkina is satan in silver nail polish. But the counselor pushes ahead in spite of the mounting evidence that he has trusted the wrong people and this will cost him everything. We see how shallow and blind he is by the company he keeps.

The great irony of the story is that characters readily confess how evil they are: Brad Pitt's Westray explains in no uncertain terms what the Mexican cartel is like and how they like to have fun; he maintains arrogantly that he can disappear in a minute, but he loses his head before he can disappear. Javier Bardem's Reiner confesses how crude and immoral he is in just about every anecdote he tells, and when he tells the counselor about Malkina having sex with his car, it really says more about him than it does about her: he acknowledges he's afraid of her, but he won't leave her. Cameron Diaz's Malkina ranks right up there with the cartel kingpins: "Truth has no temperature" she tells Reiner when he suggests she's cold-blooded: what she means is that psychopathy has no temperature: it's dead in nature, which makes it possible for psychopaths like her to do the things they do.

Finally, there is the naive fiancé Laura (Penelope Cruz), who falls for a guy who's great in bed and who gives her a big diamond ring; she just doesn't know any of his secrets or what he's really like (to wit: his disdainful and insulting attitude with his client Ruth in jail), or that he has money problems, or that he's willing to do horrible illegal things to get money. Laura's naiveté costs her her head, served on a DVD to the counselor near the end. (Lots of heads go flying in this film: it's a favored method of dispatching enemies.)

Even though the counselor gets multiple warnings about the path he's embarking on, his ego won't let him hear what's being said, and he loses everything. Pride, arrogance and denial go before a fall in his case: his refusal to see what's in plain sight means he can't protect his fiancé from the grim end she meets. "HOLA" is written on the DVD delivered to him--certainly Laura's snuff film--, and soon his turn is coming. ADIOS.

Avevo sempre snobbato questo film nei suoi passaggi televisivi perchè snobbavo da tempo Ridley Scott. Però le poche sequenze intraviste qua e là nei suddetti passaggi si erano insinuate sotto la pelle e continuavano a galleggiare nei miei pensieri senza accennare ad andarsene col tempo. Alla fine, se ho voluto aver pace me lo sono dovuto comprare. E per fortuna che l’ho fatto, perché questo film è un capolavoro di costruzione. A partire dalla formidabile (prima, mi pare) sceneggiatura originale scritta per il cinema da Cormac McCarthy, il regista (che io erroneamente ritenevo da tempo “bollito”) sfodera un film senza una sbavatura... tutto è perfetto. La colonna sonora, i dialoghi e l’apparente assenza d’azione (ma le poche scene presenti sono di una potenza tale da renderle difficilmente sostenibili allo sguardo fino in fondo) creano una tensione che cresce magistralmente e gradualmente fino ad un finale dove non è più necessario mostrare nulla, perchè quanto si è portati ad immaginare va oltre ad ogni immagine possibile.

This is a complicated yet great movie, I will not elaborate on that any further and while many people don't seem to get this movie this should not detract anyone from discovering it for themselves.
The reason for me writing this is being fed up with studio politics (again!) concerning the two versions of this movie contained within this edition. I have had it with studios suggesting to us movie fans that obviously and miraculously only inferior versions of their movies are shown in cinemas and that we as fans would owe it to ourselves to buy the consecutive home release of these films because only they contain the only true cut. So, this version features both the 1.57 hrs theatrical cut as well as the 2.17 hrs extended cut. The operative word here is "extended". This longer version contains an audio commentary by the film's director, Ridley Scott. In this commentary, he states multiple times that the extended version is just that: extended. It is not a director's cut by any means, all of the scenes that were taken out were deleted for a reason and are not meant to be within the movie at all. Having watched both cuts I find the theatrical and therefore director's cut of the movie to be perfect at slightly under two hours running time. The extended scenes in the longer version do not add anything substantial, useful or relevant but they slow the movie down quite a bit, which hurts it since pacing is very important in a film that is mostly comprised of people having high end conversations. To sum it up, the extended cut may be interesting in terms of getting a glimpse into the evolution of a movie, the way the movie is advertised however is just misleading and all the numerous internet reviewers that go on about how much better this movie is in its elongated version obvioulsy either do not share the director's vision or simply don't know what they are doing having bought into the studio BS. On a side note, this keeps happening to a lot of Ridley Scott films. Gladiator for example was a fantastic movie in its theatrical version, and even when released also in a extended cut a disgruntled Ridley Scott rang with himself not to say anything wrong in the special edition DVD/BD introduction. He even then specifically stated that the theatrical version was the director's cut and that the longer version was for enthusiasts at best. The same thing happened with American Gangster, in the commentary of which Scott described in detail why which scene had to be cut only to have them reinserted by the studio in the extended cut DVD/BD and sold as the superior version. Same case with Black Hawk Down, by the way. It should also be mentioned that whenever people claim that a longer cut was no problem since it contains anything anyway these people should consider the fact that the movie's soundtrack has to be heavily altered, remixed and repeated to accommodate the additional footage, thereby in fact altering the dynamic of even unchanged scenes. Lengthening a movie is mostly a bad idea contrary to common believe, and if the longer version would be the director's cut it would gladly be called that by the studios: a "director's cut"!
I would like to mention perhaps the most striking example of a director's cut: Ridley Scott's brother, the late Tony Scott and my favorite director, made the movie Revenge in 1990. Due to studio pressure, reshoots had to be done to artificially create a more elaborate love story in the first half of the movie. In 2007 Tony reconstructed his directors cut of the movie by removing almost 30 minutes of material and just reinserting a few new takes, also many takes were altered. This shorter version was much better because it acknowlegded itself as being a movie, not a book and therefore trying to keep a proper pacing without boring the viewer to death. The point I am trying to make is that a movie is basically created three times: In writing, in shooting and finally in editing. While no one would buy a movie the script of which has been changed for the home release or that was reshot with different actors, yet studios have made us believe the heavily recut and elongated versions they sell us would actually improve a movie. They DO NOT and anyone understanding anything about movies knows that. So please, studios, advertise your products correctly and stop misleading us for the extra buck. Movies are an artform, they are basically the director's vision of his/her movie and definitely not meant to be altered at will to maximise profit. Thanks.
