I recently read a comment attributed to Steve Earle which basically quoted Earle as saying that Bill Monroe was one of the most influential bluegrass musicians in the history of that music and anyone interested in that music had to listen to Bill Monroe in order to understand how extensive his influence on bluegrass music was.
I wasn't familiar with Bill Munroe's recordings when I read that comment so I decided to check out his music. When I looked up Monroe on Amazon, this 2CD coopilation seemed the most economical way of checking out Bill Monroe's music; so I ordered this one knowing nothing about Bill Monroe.
This turned out to be a great CD set. This compilation covers Monroe's career with Decca Records from 1950 to 1981 and is filled with classic bluegrass. After hearing this album I can readily appreciate how influential Munroe was, and still is, in bluegrass music.
This set is a really good introduction to Bill Monroe's music. If you like bluegrass, this 2CD set should be in your music collection. Highly recommended!
As a piece of music trivia, John Baldry's It Ain't Easy album, released in 1971, has vocalist Maggie Bell singing the lyric, "In the pines, In the pines, Where the sun nevers shines..........". I've had Baldry's It Ain't Easy album since it was first released but I'd never considered the source of that particlular lyric until I listened to this Bill Monroe album for the first time and heard his version of the song "In The Pines", which is actually an old Leadbelly number. That lyric on the John Baldry album is taken from Leadbelly's "In The Pines", which Bill Monroe covers on this album. Who knew?
I'll probably wrankle a few feathers with this, but I consider Bill Monroe the father of the genre of music called "bluegrass." His style of hard-driving songs sung up high were the epitome of the type of music that denotes bluegrass. This collection of music has not only songs that most of us know, but also some of his instrumental works. Either way, this is a fantastic collection. If you're into bluegrass and you'd like a sampling of Bill Monroe, this anthology is just the ticket! You'll find a wide sampling of Monroe's works on this collection, so I don't think you'll be bored by it. All the performers in this collection are creme de la creme, regardless of whatever instrument they're playing. This is a very worthwhile collection of Bill Monroe's works, and I'm sure you'll love it as much as I do.
