Critic Rex Reed called this, "One of the greatest film scores I have ever heard." I can't argue. Amazingly, composer
Manuel De Sica wrote this staggeringly beautiful, emotionally powerful score for the multi-award winning 1971 film,
"The Garden of the Finzi Contini", when he was only 21 years old for his father, Vittorio De Sica, who directed this
exquisite masterpiece about doomed aristocratic Jewish families in a WW2 Fascist Italian setting. It was nominated
for the 1971 Oscar - Best Musical Film Score. The movie, itself, won many awards including Best Foreign Language
Film - 1971, the Golden Bear (first prize) at the Berlin Film Festival, and Italy's "David di Donatello" Award for Best
Italian Film. This is the ONE soundtrack I would take with me to a desert island. Gorgeous, haunting, and deeply as
well as emotionally penetrating (like the film), it makes an unforgettable impression upon first hearing it. This new
2012 cd edition of the soundtrack on the GDM Music import label is limited to 500 copies, and contains not only the
digitally restored & remastered original 1971 soundtrack, but also an additional 13 bonus tracks of new music from
the film never released before. De Sica's magnificent composing is brilliant and contributed greatly to the powerful
impact of the film, which was adapted from Giorgio Bassani's 1962 autobiographical novel. The booklet that comes
with this deluxe cd package includes numerous beautiful color photo stills from the film, along with an introduction
from Manuel De Sica. Best known for over 100 soundtracks he has written for film & television since 1969, De Sica,
who was born in Rome in 1949, is also known as a composer of both symphonic and chamber music. The original lp
vinyl soundtrack of "The Garden" contained two opening and closing pieces called "Micol's Theme" not written by De
Sica, but Joe Brooks - these were not included in either this new deluxe edition or the very rare 1994 RCA Italian cd
import soundtrack of "Garden" which also included his 1972 soundtrack for the film "Camorra", in itself, another lush,
dreamy example of De Sica's superlative writing skills along the lines of legendary Italian film composer Piero Piccioni.
Manuel would work with his legendary father on a number of films but "The Garden of the Finzi Contini" soundtrack is
something VERY special, indeed. Brilliantly conducted by Carlo Savina, it is "characterized by a main theme for piano
and orchestra and, at the same time, many romantic and dramatic variations, where sadness makes inroads into the
feeling of love, well reflecting the imminent outbreak of World War II" - (Claudio Fuiano). Like the picture, itself, it's
a timeless, powerful work of art now available in this deluxe cd presentation beautifully produced by Gianni and Paolo
Dell'Orso. Magnificent.
