The much anticipated follow-up to Paul Thomas Anderson's Boogie Nights, Magnolia features a specially orchestrated soundtrack, largely written and performed by Aimee Mann ('Til Tuesday member and sadly overlooked solo artist). Mann's voice has always been a suitable vehicle for conveying emotional turmoil and indelible sadness, and several tracks here ("Build That Wall", "You Do", "Driving Sideways") do so with the rich melodicism that informs her best work. Producer Jon Brion's sprightly horn arrangements for "Momentum" are an unexpected (though not completely unwelcome) splash of cold water. Only Mann's cover of the Harry Nilsson-penned Three Dog Night hit "One" backfires, as it simply doesn't deliver the same effective climax as the original. The two Supertramp tracks from their Breakfast in America LP tacked on at album's end are incongruous; but for anyone with an interest in Mann's melodic song writing, there are eight worthy originals waiting for you. --Rob O'Connor

If Magnolia was a stunning film, the soundtrack music is equally strong. Most of it is by Aimee Mann. Whether these songs were written for the movie, I don’t know, but they sound pretty good on their own. There is a sadness to them from the get go which is apparent in songs like ‘One,’ ‘Wise Up,’ and ‘Save Me.’ They are all great songs though, beautifully sung, well arranged and cleverly produced. This album probably set the benchmark for Aimee Mann’s work.

There is also two songs by Supertramp and one by Jon Brion, an Aimee Mann associate.

Aimee Mann sings some very good songs regarding misgivings people generally have about how relationships and romance "fix" people. Which figures since the movie is about self deception. Overall the soundtrack has some very good music on it.

Aimee Mann beweist uns hier, wie vielseitig sie ist. Dieser Soundtrack hat ihr mit dem Song "Save me" eine Oscar-Nominierung eingebracht - sie hätte ihn verdient.
Meine persönlichen Highlights sind "Wise Up" - eine klavierlastige, schlichte Ballade - und "Driving Sideways", ein regelrechter Ohrwurm mit sehr eingängigem Refrain.
Die Songs sind abwechslungsreich instrumentiert, Aimee spielt viele Instrumente auf ihren Platten selbst ein. Ihre Stimme besticht durch ihre unangestrengte, aber präzise Art.
Alles in allem ein rundes Album, großer Hörgenuss, ich würde sagen, ein Klassiker!
