商品の説明
2010 two CD holiday collection. Winter Wonderland is a totally dynamic collection that presents the very best of Christmas, both sacred and secular, and features some of the best remembered performers of all time. The first CD focuses on Fred Waring and His Pennsylvanians who's Christmas albums were among the best sellers of the '50's and '60's. The Andrews Sisters and Guy Lombardo's joint recordings, 'Winter Wonderland', 'Merry Christmas Polka', 'Christmas Island' and 'Christmas Candles' sold in their millions. Finally the icing on the (Christmas) cake has to be the entire Dick Haymes Christmas album appearing on CD for the first time with such gems as 'The Christmas Song' and 'Christmas Dreaming'. Jasmine.

I grew up singing the songs on the Waring disc in church choir and high school glee club and to hear them again was pure magic. Years ago I contacted the keepers of the Waring masters and asked for a copy of "The Song of Christmas" since the LP I had it on was in awful shape--from lots of playing. What they sent was not nearly as good as the cut on this disc and that alone makes it worth what I paid. And this is the first commercial disc I have seen with this wonderful performance. Though my parents are both gone long ago, they would haved loved the variety disc. When the last living member of my family of "The Greatest Generation" heard it, she was moved to tears of praise.
Christmas is a special time for all of us and having this music of this quality makes it even moreso.

The first segegment, titled Fred Waring and his Pennsylvanians, contains a selection of songs sandwiched between showy opening and closing tracks. The second segment, titled The meaning of Christmas, and the third segment, titled The song of Christmas, but really a medley) feature an announcer (Fred?) who interjects brief-comments between songs, and these become somewhat annoying to me. I much prefer narrative, if it is to be used at all, to be a bit more substantive. For example, Perry Como's recording of The Story of the First Christmas has meaningful narrative that draws the listener in. There is none of that here. It may have worked well on TV and radio at the time (as Perry's recording probably did) but it doesn't stand the test of time well. I wish Jasmine had edited out these brief comments.
In any case, I bought this set because of CD 2, which contains all the Christmas music recorded by Dick Haymes (who originally wrote and recorded Love letters, a song that became much more popular in the sixties via covers by Ketty Lester and Elvis Presley), together with a selection of Christmas music by Guy Lombardo and / or the Andrews sisters.
I have most if not all of the Andrews sisters tracks elsewhere, and it may now be that I have all the Christmas music they ever recorded, but I can't be sure. Two tracks with Danny Kaye (A Merry Christmas At Grandmother's, All I Want For Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth) are not mentioned in the booklet, while six duets with BNing Crosby are mentioned but aren't included. With the 12 tracks here with or without Guy Lombardo, that's 20 that I know about. I hope that one day they all appear on CD together :-) I love all the 12 tracks here, but I particularly like Christmas candles. Also noteworthy is Sleigh ride, which was the first vocal recording of this song.
Without the Andrews sisters, Guy recorded some famous Christmas song as well as four songs new to me that are featured here.
While CD 2 is outstanding and easily rates 5 stars on its own, this is a double CD so I can only give the set 4 stars, but I still feel it was worth buying for CD 2.

I brought this specifically for the Fred Waring "Meaning of Christmas" and "The Song of Christmas" which has been our family's tradition to listen to each Christmas Eve since the 60s. While the overall the sound quality is great, sections are clipped to fit onto one CD. For example, The Song of Christmas normally begins with the narration "Yes, Christmas means Santa Claus and reindeer and toys and gifts..." but on this CD that is simply not there and begins with the choir and Fred saying "In those days the angel Gabriel...". So to be picky and traditional, this version isn't the same as the original.
So three stars because I'm a traditional snob :) but a star back because truly if this is your first Fred Waring CD, it covers most bases and you can't get it any cheaper right now anywhere I can find it.
I have no idea about disc 2 but I love music from that era so I'm excited to add it to my collection.
