Two factors account for the broad-based popularity of Secret Garden (the duo of Norwegian keyboardist Rolf Lovland and Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry). One: the twosome's attractive, smartly conceived mix of compatible elements including light classical, urbane New Age, and well-mannered contemporary Celtic. Two: the pair's ability to persuasively present this formula with poise and (crucially) fetching good looks in a concert film, which in 1999 enjoyed broad exposure on American public television. (The performance, A Night with Secret Garden, is available on DVD.) White Stones is Lovland and Sherry's second collaboration, and, despite a few side trips into weighty sentimentality (e.g., the heart-clutching earnestness of "First Day of Spring"), it nicely conveys the pair's simple yet endearing children-of-the-cosmos spirit. Highlights here include the disc's energized, Celtic-influenced tunes ("Steps," "Moving," "Escape") and an infectious, regal charmer ("Celebration") Lovland composed in honor of the Queen of Norway's 60th birthday. Accompanied on nearly every piece by a small orchestra or Celtic instrumentalists, Sherry's violin sometimes evokes moods of melancholy that seem better suited for a two-hanky, movie-of-the-week film score. Yet a piece such as "Hymn to Hope" shows she can also elegantly trigger deeper feelings of longing and anticipation that can linger for hours. Overall, a worthwhile listen. --Terry Wood

    シークレット・ガーデンの2ndアルバムです。このホワイト・ストーンズという題名は童話「ヘンゼルとグレーテル」で
    二人の兄妹が森に捨てられたとき、目印となるように置いていった月の光で輝く石からつけられたのだそうです。

    アルバムの雰囲気は前作同様に深い森をイメージさせるような幻想的な曲が多いですが、ずっと閉ざされているわけではなく、
    どこかしら木漏れ日や月光が差し込んでくるような穏やかな雰囲気もあります。

    個人的に素晴らしいと思ったのはTrack2,3,14です。叙事性のあるメロディーが本当に美しく、心揺さぶられます。
    特にTrack3はアメリカのコロンバイン高校で銃乱射事件が起きた後、生徒を落ち着かせるために流されていたそうです。

    他にも儚げで哀愁を感じさせるTrack5,6,11,13や、ファンタジー映画やRPGで流れてきそうなTrack1,8,10など、全ての曲の完成度が高い作品です。
    歌は収録されていないですが、それでもインスト曲だけでこれだけ魅了できるのはやはり素晴らしいです。
    このアルバム、ぜひおすすめします。

    シークレット・ガーデンの音楽に初めて出会ったのは、とある番組で1997年に放送された、1997年に廃線となった鉄道の特集でした。 映像の内容に合ったシークレット・ガーデンの音楽で涙が流れたのを今でも覚えています。 その時はアーティスト名が分からず悶々としていましたが、5年後の2002年、何気なく見ていた「世界の車窓から」から聞き覚えのある音楽が…。 テロップを見たらアーティスト名にシークレット・ガーデンの文字がありました。 次の日あわててCDショップに行ってCDを買ってきたのは言うまでもありません。 CDを聴いたらどれも番組で流れた曲ばかり。あの時の感動がよみがえり、また涙が流れました。 その後別のアルバムも買いましたが、いずれのアルバムもよかったです。 CDを買うきっかけとしては特殊かもしれませんが、シークレット・ガーデンは本当におすすめです。

    夜寝るときにカケルトスムーズに寝付くことができます。とても心が落ち着きます。やさしい気持ちにさせてくれる曲です。シークレトガーデンは、ほとんどのアルバムを持っていますがどれも良い曲ばかりです。ちなみにベストアルバムは韓国バージョンです。韓国ドラマにもよく使われています。キリスト教信者が多い韓国の人に支持されているのでしょう。

    It is noteworthy that a majority of selections on the CDs "Songs from a Secret Garden" and "White Stones" are included on the best of collection, "The Ultimate Secret Garden," meaning that these CDs are almost a "best of" in and of themselves, limited only by time and space.

    So, one reason for my purchasing "White Stones," was the absence of the beautiful "Illumination," on the best of collection.

    Of the 14 selections on "White Stones," all but six appear on the best of collection. Of the six, I would say that three are worthy of being included in the "best of" collection. They are - "Illumination," "Sanctuary," and the sweet "Appassionata." (Anyone else stirred by the final two notes in "Appassionata?" Sometimes a composer will opt out in the ending of a song by not taking a risk in putting real closure to a song - and I am not talking about the closure put to a song like "Moving," where driving percussion puts a closing stamp on the piece. With "Appassionata," at the end we are in a high uplifted state, and rather than gently bringing the listener down, Lovland elevates the listener two additional levels - listen again and see if you have the same experience!)

    The other three selections - "First Day of Spring" reminded me of a gentle treatment of melodic phrasing that was pentatonic in structure, but of an Eastern (Chinese/Japanese) modality - the melody is not meant to take the listener anywhere other than being at rest with where they are - very relaxing. Had a similar experience with "Reflection," albeit that the modality and melody is more Debussy like. The last of the three selections is "Home," one of the most basic and frill-free songs on this CD. In fact, it sounded almost like a piano solo with a very simple melody. It is not bad, but a very plain vanilla kind of song.

    One song featured on this CD and on the best of collection is "Escape." This is one of my least liked songs Secret Garden has done. The chordal structure and melody are very limited, repetive, and uninteresting. The piece struck me as being more appropriate for some sort of physical workout, dance, than as a vehicle to enjoy just for listening pleasure.

    The inner liner note pamphlet contains a brief description of the background meaning behind each song. The pamphlet and CD cover are designed with a very attractive blue artwork.

    One aspect of this CD that other posters have noted which I agree with is the way the energy flows on this CD due to the sequence of song selection - the producer put together the order masterfully, opening up with the upbeat "Steps," alternating with slower more reflective songs, to the midpoint of the CD with perhaps on the two best songs SG has every done, "Passacaglia," proceeding through other upbeat and reflective numbers, and concluding with the heavenly "Illumination."

    For anyone who just has the "best of" collection by Secret Garden, I recommend "White Stones" as a compliment since it contains a few additional songs that are worth getting for their exceptional quality. For anyone who wants to be introduced to the music of SG, I would highly recommend "White Stones," as on par with the selection of music on the other gem "Songs from a Secret Garden," as a perfect choice.

    On the first day I received this CD, I listened to it twice. The next day, twice also. That's how good it is. This is one of the most enjoyable CDs I have ever bought. Highly recommended for use in healing, relaxation, inspiration, and getting reconnected to what really matters in life.

    Conoscevo i Secret Garden per un DVD su un concerto "A Naight with secret garden" acquistato in Taiwan. Questo disco è semplicemente meraviglioso, melodico, orecchiabile, sublime. Il pezzo forte è a mio avviso il numero nove della compilation denominato non a caso "Appassionata", si tratta di uno dei vertici musicali del nostro secolo, una musica di forte connotazione romantica che colpisce direttamente al cuore dell'ascoltatore, fin dalla solenne e mestissima introduzione orchestrale, un magico tappeto d'archi che da poi voce ad uno sconvolgente assolo prima del violoncello poi del violino solista. Altro pezzo sublime è il numero 14, dal titolo illuminazione un'apoteosi del violino solista che conduce l'ascoltatore ad impennate verticali davvero vertiginose! Altri pezzi fantastici, ma già peraltro presenti in altre magnifiche complilation sono il poema e la passacaglia che non hanno semplicemente bisogno d'essere commentate tanto sono belle e struggenti. Da acquistare anche per il prezzo amazon assolutamente conveniente.
